Lead a dedicated engineering team at The Athletic, defining technical strategies and managing product development across web, iOS, and Android platforms to enhance user engagement.
About Us Powered by one of the largest global newsrooms in sports media, The Athletic brings sports fans the most comprehensive stories about the teams, sports and athletes they love. The Athletic’s newsroom of 500+ full-time staff delivers in-depth coverage of hundreds of professional and college teams across more than 47 North American markets and all 20 football clubs in the English Premier League, as well as many Championship clubs. About the Role We’re looking for an experienced VP Engineering to lead our growing team of software engineers. You will report to the CTO and your direct reports will be the (5) engineering managers who lead our product teams. We’re looking for an engineering leader who can excel at defining our technical strategy, translating that strategy into staffing and technical roadmaps, and then growing and managing the team to execute on those roadmaps. The product engineering team will build across all our platforms, including web, iOS and Android. Your team of full-stack engineers (and you too, if you want to) will be working on every part of the stack: web, backend, API, database, analytics. Responsibilities
  • You will be responsible for managing the hiring process as additional engineers join our team, with a focus on diversity and inclusion, and staffing and structuring your teams to meet business needs.
  • Manage your team of leaders and help them to deliver high-quality software in a fast-paced, agile, high-growth environment.
  • Make technology, infrastructure, architectural, and hiring decisions to meet anticipated demands and scale.
  • Evaluate trade-offs and effectively prioritize tasks within each team in alignment with strategic initiatives and company goals.
  • Collaborate closely with product, design, editorial, data science, and marketing teams to define strategy, execute on roadmaps, and remove roadblocks.
  • Hold regular 1:1s, evaluate performance, and provide consistent productive feedback.
  • Help engineers learn the skills needed to advance in their career.
  • Work with engineers and product managers to iterate on and improve team processes and efficiency.
  • Contribute to important company-wide initiatives like diversity and inclusion, technical brand, and hiring process.
  • Requirements
  • 8+ years of experience managing an engineering team.
  • Experience leading a team building a consumer product on both web and iOS/Android, evaluating architecture tradeoffs and helping team make technical decisions.
  • Direct experience scaling a small to medium/large team highly desired (but not required).
  • Experience with some portion of our tech stack, and an appetite to learn the remainder: AWS, Javascript (React, Next.js, Node.js, Apollo/GraphQL), PHP (Wordpress), MySQL/DynamoDB, ElasticSearch.
  • Enthusiasm to work in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment.
  • A strong desire to stay connected to the codebase—this can be a hands-on role if desired.
  • The current team is largely based in San Francisco, CA but this role (and the engineers on your team) can be based in a 100% remote capacity within the United States or Canada.
  • The annual base salary range for this role is $270,000.00 - $300,000.00 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location. It may also include non-cash rewards and benefits.
