Position Summary
University Health Network (UHN) is looking for an experienced professional to fill the key role of Veterinary Technician in our Animal Resource Centre. Veterinary Technicians, within UHN's Animal Resource Centre, are involved in basic animal husbandry of multi species of laboratory animals and are responsible for the health and welfare of animals in their care.  Duties include animal husbandry of a variety of species, health monitoring, treatments and technical services such as blood draws and drug administration.

Veterinary Technicians are involved in day-to-day communication with clinical veterinarians and laboratory staff, contacting them by phone and or email with any issues involving animal health and welfare.

Duties

  • Animal husbandry of multiple species, health monitoring, treatments and technical services such as blood draws and drug administration.
  • General animal and procedure room cleaning throughout all sites
  • Wash, sanitize, and sterilize animal cages, bottles, rack systems, and related equipment using automated cage washers and autoclaves.
  • Prepare clean, sanitized cages with appropriate bedding and supplies for animal care staff.
  • Maintain cleanliness in wash-up and cage preparation areas.
  • Day to day communication with clinical veterinarians and laboratory staff, contacting them by phone and or email with any issues involving animal health and welfare.
  • Completion of a community college program in Veterinary Technology or recognized equivalent
  • Registration with Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science as a Registered Laboratory Animal Technician, may be obtained after employment
  • One year practical and related experience and/or 2 years on-the-job training required
  • Previous experience within a laboratory animal facility
  • Experience handling laboratory animals; both rodents and larger animal species
  • WHMIS training
  • Ability to utilize Excel, Word and Outlook at moderate proficiency
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • No known allergies to animals
  • Exercise initiative and time management skills
  • Effective organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Exercise good judgement with ability to multi-task
  • Compliance with confidentiality requirements
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines
  • Knowledge of applicable legislative, UHN and/or departmental policies
  • Client service oriented, with the ability to effectively work with diversity and appreciate that people with different opinions, backgrounds and characteristics bring richness to the challenge or situation at hand
  • Vaccines (COVID and others) are a requirement of the job unless you have an exemption on a medical ground pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code.
