About the department
Our Customer Operations department is responsible for ensuring our customers get the best value out of our products. This includes maintaining customer relationships, consulting with the customer on their routing, optimisation, performance and use of the products, integrating with the customer’s onboard and cloud IT systems, configuring the product for use by the customer and coordinating outsourcers who aid with the above.
About the position
Within the Customer Operations department, we are looking for a Vessel Performance/ Naval Engineer to provide expert analysis and support to the rest of the departments and the client directly. This includes providing thorough analysis on client requests, supporting product development with subject-matter expertise, preparing reports on performance and data quality, flagging and resolving issues that may affect customer value escalated by support teams, and consulting customers directly on how to best get value out of their data and our products for the performance of their vessels.
We are looking for a capable, knowledgeable and domain expert individual willing to lead the growth of our performance and monitoring tools.
Main responsibilities
Model Development & Validation: Co-develop and validate models for ship propulsion, seakeeping, and maneuvering (steady and unsteady conditions), ensuring accuracy through analytical and empirical sanity checks. Define reference lines to optimize vessel performance
Engineering Data Integrity: Use naval engineering principles to assess data quality, identify anomalies in complex datasets, and validate the outputs of AI models.
Shipboard Data Systems: Manage and utilize shipboard data (engine monitoring, fuel consumption, navigation sensors) to support model development and performance evaluation.
Performance & AI Interpretation: Analyze vessel and engine performance across diverse types and clearly explain Machine Learning model results to stakeholders.
Visualization tools: Help in development of analytics dashboards and new analytics methodologies
Communication with Clients: Compile reports for customers and partners
Strategic Collaboration: Cooperate efficiently with internal and external stakeholders using data-enhanced deliverables, and support product innovation with deep naval knowledge.Contribute to the specification and testing of new products
Regulation Advisory: Develop and maintain technical strategies to ensure all vessel performance models and reporting outputs align with current and anticipated maritime regulatory requirements (e.g., IMO, EU MRV, IMO DCS, CII).
The ideal candidate will have
Naval/Mechanical/Marine Engineering background
Experience as Technical Superintendent would be considered an asset
At least 4 years of work experience in a similar role
Work experience in the commercial shipping industry, preferably in a Performance department, is highly desired
Experience with business analysis tools
Fluency in English, both written and verbal
Ability to work in fast-paced environments and meet set deadlines
Knowledge of coding languages (e.g. Python, R) considered an advantage
Excellent communication, problem-solving and management skills
Highly self-motivated, accountable and committed
Process Optimization/Automation mentality
Results-oriented mindset
Ability to work in cross-functional teams
Nice to have
Familiarity with coating technologies and their impact on hull resistance.
Experience in machine learning model validation and performance curve development.
Understanding of data reliability assessment and preprocessing techniques (filtering, outlier detection, signal integrity).
Experience in sea trials, performance testing, and sensor calibration analysis.
Strong communication skills; ability to translate complex technical insights into actionable recommendations for clients and internal stakeholders
