JOB SUMMARY
The Utility Person ensures safe, efficient, and continuous production operations by providing technical leadership, training, and oversight to less experienced team members. This role is essential in material handling, housekeeping, and equipment support—acting as a bridge between frontline production and supervisory management, helping to optimize operational flow, safety, and quality standards. 
This position involves various manual and equipment-based tasks to support plant operations and maintenance. Responsibilities include shoveling, sweeping, lifting, pushing and pulling various objects, raking, and operating equipment such as skid steers, backhoes, pavers, and rollers. The role also includes cross-functional duties in plant maintenance and equipment operation, with a strong emphasis on safety, adaptability, and teamwork.
 
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
  • Operates production and plant-specific mobile equipment (e.g., skid steer, water truck, front-end loader) safely and efficiently within company guidelines and safety standards.
  • Uses standard operating procedures to troubleshoot malfunctions or issues.
  • Participates in plant operations, including production, loading, and shipping.
  • Under direct supervision, adjusts equipment to maximize production.
  • Provide on-the-job coaching to ensure team members develop proper techniques for shoveling, sweeping, cleanup, and equipment assistance.
  • Guide, train, and mentor Laborers in daily activities, equipment handling, and safety protocols.
  • Operate and assist with skid steers, backhoes, pavers, rollers, loaders, and water trucks as required.
  • Conduct routine preventive maintenance on plant and mobile equipment: greasing, lubricating, replacing belts/ bearings, splicing conveyors.
  • Perform pre- and post-shift inspections; maintain accurate maintenance logs and report irregularities
  • Ensure work areas, machinery, and roads are clean and safe using tools such as shovels and sweeps.
  • Provide operational support across departments: rail unloading, stockpile management, housekeeping, maintenance, quality control, and scale house operations. 
  • Assist with additional tasks outside core responsibilities as needed
  • In addition to the primary responsibilities outlined, the successful candidate may be expected to take on other tasks and assignments as required, including but not limited to duties outside the typical scope of the role to support overall team operations and organizational needs. Flexibility and adaptability to evolving job demands are essential.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience
Work Experience
1-2 years of prior experience in the aggregate industry, preferred; experience in plant operations, and maintenance is a plus 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Physical Requirements
  • You must be able to lift or move up to 50 lbs occasionally.
  • Extensive use of hands to finger, handle, or feel objects and tools. You will be expected to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl to reach equipment for maintenance.
  • Requires sharp vision (close, distance, color, and peripheral) and depth perception. You must also be able to monitor auditory and visual signals during equipment operation.
Working Conditions
All duties require outside assignments and periods of work in all weather conditions, cold, wet, dry and dusty. Must be able to work in areas where noise levels are up to 85 dbs.  
 
COMPENSATION
The hiring range for this position is $23.00 -$30.00 exclusive of benefits or bonuses (discretionary and non-discretionary). The offered base compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, business need, market conditions, proficiencies, skills, education, and experience. Additionally, at Martin Marietta we place a high value on internal pay equity and will consider the compensation for those in similarly situated roles and direct team members. The hiring range for this role represents the base compensation we expect to pay for the position at time of hire and does not represent the total possible base pay of the position.
