The Opportunity
The Trojans Capture the Flag (CTF) Coach will lead SAIT’s cybersecurity competition team–an innovative extension of the Trojans Club program menu of student engagement opportunities. Modeled after the Trojans Esports framework, the Cyber Trojans compete in national and international CTF competitions, providing students with real-world cybersecurity experience, teamwork, and leadership development opportunity.
Our CTF Coach is responsible for supporting students as they work through competitive cybersecurity challenges, support hands-on learning aligned with academic initiatives, while fostering a positive, inclusive team environment consistent with SAIT FIRST principles and the Trojans pillars of Courage, Determination & Spirit.
The Role
Key responsibilities and major duties include, but are not limited to:
Program Management Support
Lead the development, organization, and management of SAIT’s Trojans Capture the Flag (CTF) cybersecurity team
Assist with all team related activities along with support from Trojans admin & assigned sport coordinator
Coaching
Create an environment that is aligned with SAIT FIRST principles and fosters holistic growth of student athletes & staff
Create a culture of excellence that motivates athletes & staff to strive for their best in all aspects of being a part of Trojans programming
Create and facilitate regular team practices and training sessions within the SAIT Cyber Range
Work directly with Head Athletic Therapist to ensure YTP is conducive to injury prevention & peak health throughout the season
Administration
Adhere to all Trojans & league requirements regarding athlete onboarding each season (Transfers, LOIs, Nominations, Required training/education sessions etc.)
Adhere to SAIT policies, procedures and protocols including p-card purchasing, web time entry, mandatory SafeSport training, facility access controls, ID card presentations, brand alignment and respectful workplace related expectations
Team scheduling, planning and structuring including communications
Submit required documentation in a timely fashion
Maintain communication platforms (e.g., Discord, Teams, or other collaboration tools) to support team coordination and engagement
EDI, Safesport & SAIT Engagement
Collaborate with academic departments to align CTF learning opportunities with SAIT’s cybersecurity programs and curriculum
Support & promote SAIT & Trojans initiatives not directly tied to athletic pursuits
Advancement of a #wearetrojans mentality
Qualifications & Experience Required
Competed in or coached teams for CTF Competitions
Knows how to prioritize challenges during competitions
Familiarity with common CTF platforms (e.g. CTFd, kCTF, RootTheBox, HackTheBox, TryHackMe)
Ability to develop realistic and challenging problems for practice
Comfortable guiding students through live problem-solving
Strong leadership to motivate and organize the team effectively
Proficiency in offensive security (e.g. penetration testing, exploit development, and red team tactics)
Reverse engineering & binary exploitation experience (e.g. ability to analyze compiled code, debug, and craft exploits)
Understanding of modern cryptographic algorithms and common weaknesses
Expertise in application security (SQL injection, XSS, CSRF, and advanced web exploitation)
Skills in forensics and incident response (e.g. memory analysis, disk forensics, and log analysis)
Strong understanding of network infrastructure/protocols (e.g. TCP/IP, packet crafting, and network attacks)
Familiarity with AI, cloud security, container exploitation, and IoT hacking
Preferred Qualifications & Experience
Post-secondary credentials in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, or related field
Certifications such as OSCP, GPEN, CEH, or equivalent practical experience
