As the Trade Compliance Business Intelligence Manager, you will lead our global team ensuring Syngenta Group's agricultural products move seamlessly across international borders while driving systems and process improvements. You'll manage product classification for customs (Harmonized System codes) and controlled substances compliance, working with governments, supply chain teams, and regulatory authorities worldwide. This strategic role combines technical chemistry knowledge with trade law expertise to protect Syngenta's ability to operate globally.
Responsibilities include:
- Lead and manage the Business Intelligence team through high standard and support methodology
- Guide team to identify potential risks and control gaps; develop mitigating strategies to minimize risk
- Lead and advise on Harmonized System Classification and Controlled Substances issues globally. Serve as escalation point for complex classification issues or disputes
- Oversee implementation and management of all HS Classification and Controlled Substances responsibilities related to Trade Compliance
- Liaise and negotiate with governments and authorities on Customs Classification and Controlled Substances issues in collaboration with Regional Trade Compliance Officers
- Participate as active member of the Global Trade Compliance (GTC) Team to protect Syngenta's trade interests and expand freedom to operate across borders
- Represent Syngenta externally on behalf of Trade Compliance
- Inform stakeholders about regulatory changes impacting Customs Classification and Controlled Substances
- Ensure HS and CS Codes of Practice and KPIs are aligned with GTC Policy
- Develop and implement corrective action plans for problematic issues
- Respond to alleged violations of laws, regulations, and policies by evaluating or recommending investigative procedures
- Provide litigation support related to customs classification, conduct case analysis with significant business cost impact
- Sponsor and influence AI/automation projects for classification processes
- Drive digital transformation of classification systems, working closely with IT on system changes and implementations
- Manage stakeholder expectations during major IT/system transformation projects
- Collaborate with Training center of excellence to ensure relevant HS Classification and Controlled Substances training is provided annually
- Assist in development and preparation of key metrics for senior management
- Degree in chemistry or chemistry-related science
- 5+ years in Customs/International Trade Operations/Compliance or relevant chemical field
- Demonstrated experience in people management
- Fluency in English
- Ability to efficiently collaborate with IT teams on system changes, integrations, and transformation projects
- Change management skills for driving adoption of new technologies and processes
- Ability to work across international boundaries and adapt to changing environments
- Experience working in virtual/remote teams
- Some travel required
Additional Preferred Knowledge
- Knowledge of Customs Classification, Controlled Substances laws and regulations, and international movement of chemical/biological products
- Understanding of logistics, supply chain operations, and business improvement processes
- Knowledge of SAP and other relevant systems
