The Technologist, Montreal Teleports and remote operations, will manage and maintain Eastern Teleports infrastructure. Including but not limited to Northern communities, (Northern Quebec) for which Telesat provides phone services to all of Nunavik. In addition, they will maintain satellite gateways, site and system programming, daily checks, and overall preventive maintenance of the satellite systems.
Main Responsibilities:
As part of the Network Support group within Operations, provide level 2 support for Telesat hub and network systems.
Work closely with Telesat Engineering and other staff in the implementation or modification of Telesat and customer systems.
Travel to support remote group, for installations as well as corrective maintenance is required.
Create and update Teleport services documentation and procedures as required.
Work directly with Telesat customers and/or third-party suppliers as required.
Maintain a clean, safe and professional workspace.
Education and Experience required:
Electronics/Telecommunications Technologist Diploma, or the equivalent
Strong interpersonal skills, strong customer service skills required.
Familiarity with RF systems, especially satellite-based RF systems is an asset.
Knowledge of IP based LAN/WAN networks and routing protocols (Ethernet, TCP/IP, UDP/IP, RIP, EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, VLAN, QinQ).
Familiarity with interconnection of network devices and complex network architecture
Familiar with various types of telecommunications test equipment
2- 5 years of experience would be an asset.
Knowledge of basic scripting tools and Network Management protocols (SNMP, SYSLOG) would be an asset.
Familiarity with MS Office suite
Equipment used:
Various communications and RF uplink and downlink components are used
High power amplifiers, upconverters, downconverters, routers, switches, video encoders, servers.
Various pieces of test gear are used such as spectrum analyzers, radiation meters, power meters, digital voltmeters, transport stream analyzers, video analyzers, LAN Analyzers and frequency counters.
Decision Making and Supervision:
The Eastern Teleports & Remote Technologist is expected to make decisions as to the correct course of action to take when an alarm is received or when a problem is reported or discovered on a teleport service or system. The technologist is expected to perform planning in executing on assigned maintenance tasks and duties.
Supervision of contractors or customers working at a Telesat or customer location is sometimes required. Senior technologist will be expected to provide supervision and guidance to junior technologists. The Eastern Teleports & Remote Technologist is expected to take the lead role in troubleshooting network issues or in implementing changes to a network or hub system.
Working Conditions:
Shift work (weekday) as required and the ability to work in an unsupervised environment is a requirement of this position.
On call support on a rotational basis is part of this role.
Frequent Travel is a requirement of this position.
The successful candidate must be able to work in Canada and obtain Government of Canada clearance
