AI overview

As Chalk's first Technical Writer, you'll shape the documentation strategy, making complex ML concepts accessible to engineers and users alike.

About Chalk:

Chalk is building the data platform that powers the future of machine learning. We tear down barriers of complexity, latency, and scale that have traditionally constrained ML capabilities. Our platform combines Rust-speed performance with elegant tools that developers love to use. Leading companies depend on Chalk for everything from stopping fraudulent credit card swipes and identity verification to maximizing clean energy capture.

We're a fast-moving, technically elite team composed of Advent of Code winners, former Jane Street quants, and Rust compiler contributors. If you’re excited by infrastructure, performance, and developer experience, you’ll be in good company.

About the Role:

We’re looking for Chalk’s first Technical Writer — someone who can read code like a book and turn complexity into clarity. Your writing will be the first touchpoint for many engineers exploring Chalk and a trusted guide for those building with it.

This is a foundational role with outsized impact. You’ll work closely with engineering, product, and developer advocacy to define our documentation strategy from the ground up. Whether you’re explaining how our symbolic Python interpreter works or guiding a team through real-time feature engineering, your work will make Chalk more accessible, discoverable, and powerful.

What You’ll Do:

  • Own and scale Chalk’s technical documentation, including user guides, SDK/API docs, conceptual overviews, and example workflows.
  • Translate complex, low-level systems into elegant and accessible writing that developers can rely on.
  • Read and understand production-grade code to document functionality with precision and empathy.
  • Work directly with engineers and product teams to stay close to the source of truth and ensure technical accuracy.
  • Write for both breadth and depth, helping users quickly get started while also supporting advanced use cases.
  • Build Chalk’s documentation infrastructure and voice, establishing how we communicate technically as a company.

What We’re Looking For:

  • 3+ years in a technical writing, developer documentation, or software engineering role
  • You can read and understand code fluently, especially in languages like Python, Rust, or similar
  • Experience working with AI infrastructure, ML tooling, or distributed systems
  • A writing portfolio that shows your ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly
  • Strong communication skills — you're as comfortable reviewing code with engineers as you are explaining features to end users
  • High attention to detail and organization, with a passion for clarity
  • Familiarity with tools like Markdown, static site generators (e.g. Docusaurus, Hugo), and Git workflows

Bonus Points:

  • Experience at early-stage startups or with fast-moving product teams
  • Contributions to developer platforms
  • Familiarity with real-time systems, feature engineering, or inference infrastructure
  • Understanding of compiler or query planning concepts

Why Chalk

  • Work on technically ambitious products with top-tier engineers
  • Help shape the voice and usability of a platform powering the next generation of ML
  • Join an early team with the opportunity to grow and define your role
  • Competitive salary, equity, and benefits

We believe great documentation is part of great product design. If you thrive on clarity, read code like it’s prose, and want to help developers move fast with Chalk — we’d love to hear from you.

Meet Chalk Chalk is building machine learning infrastructure to answer the world’s hardest questions. Our platform is built to power credit, risk, insurance, medical, and recommendation decisions for the world’s most innovative companies. Answering these complex questions requires sourcing data from a wide range of providers and rapidly iterating on feature definitions. Chalk makes it easy for machine learning teams to build high-performance pipelines that deliver data to models at the right time. We orchestrate infrastructure and automatically track data lineage so developers can work confidently and focus on their unique products and insights. Meet Our Founders Elliot started his career at Affirm where he built the early risk and credit data infrastructure system (the inspiration for Chalk). He then started Haven Money (with Andy) which Credit Karma acquired to power its banking products. Andy met Elliot at Stanford admit weekend – Elliot was his room host and they’ve been best friends ever since. After school, Andy worked at Palantir on large government data infrastructure projects. He then founded Haven Money (with Elliot) which now powers Credit Karma Money. Marc spent many years at Google where he helped to launch the first version of Google Wallet. He went on to start Index which Stripe acquired as its in-store payment solution – it’s now called Stripe Terminal.
