FHU is a leader in transportation engineering dedicated to delivering exceptional services, innovative solutions, and high-quality deliverables. We are seeking a mid-level Technical Editor to join our Marketing and Creative Communications team. The ideal candidate must have a strong background in technical editing with the ability to review, edit, format, and enhance technical documents. The Technical Editor will work alongside our Lead Technical Editor. The Technical Editor will collaborate with project managers, engineers, planners, and scientists to produce high-quality reports, manuals, proposals, grant applications, and other technical documents. This is a hybrid position in our Denver South office with the option to work from home 2 days per week. The Technical Editor will support the company’s eight offices located across the Rockies and the Midwest.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform substantive editorial reviews of technical documents and marketing materials for correctness, organization, clarity, voice, verb tense, consistency, grammar, and conformity with company, client, or agency style guidelines and requirements
- Format technical documents, including figures, tables, cross-references, appendices, tables of contents, headers/footers, footnotes, automated captions, and template styles
- Apply plain language principles to ensure materials are easy to read, understand, and use
- Create Section 508 compliant documents and review documents for compliance
- Ensure consistency in terminology, style, and format across all project-related documentation
- Collaborate and coordinate with engineers and subject matter experts to understand complex technical concepts and ensure they are effectively communicated to the intended audience
- Maintain and update document templates, style guides, and other reference materials
- Manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks to meet client deadlines and expectations for quality and accuracy
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and company guidelines in all documentation
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in English, Technical Communications, or a related field from an accredited institution
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in technical editing, preferably within the engineering industry
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work independently and under tight deadlines
- Understanding of technical terminology and the ability to interpret and summarize engineering documents.
- Intermediate level skills in Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat
- Experience in print design and layout helpful
- Knowledge of Section 508 and WCAG compliance
- Experience using Common Look tools helpful
- Familiarity with style guides such as the Chicago Manual of Style, AP, or similar
The pay for this position has a range of $28 - $38 hourly. The actual offer will carefully consider a range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, and experience.
