BPM—where caring and community are in our company DNA. We are seeking a highly skilled Tax Manager with winery experience to join our expanding Tax practice. This individual will manage complex tax engagements, oversee client relationships across the wine industry, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure exceptional client service. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who understands the unique operational, regulatory, and tax challenges of vineyards, wineries, and wine distributors.
While we prefer candidates who live within close proximity to wine country and can work in a hybrid capacity, we are also open to considering highly qualified remote applicants with strong winery industry experience.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and review federal, state, and local tax returns for winery, vineyard, agribusiness, and related consumer product clients.
Manage tax planning, compliance, and consulting projects, including inventory costing (UNICAP), production accounting, valuation considerations, and state apportionment for multi-state producers/distributors.
Provide guidance on beverage alcohol regulations, excise tax considerations, and entity structures unique to the wine sector.
Conduct technical research and provide practical recommendations tailored to the wine industry.
Oversee and review ASC 740 tax provision work for applicable clients.
Champion sustainable workplace practices by supporting remote-first operations, promoting paperless workflows through digital collaboration tools, participating in recycling initiatives to minimize paper use, and consistently demonstrate alignment with BPM’s values
Engagement Management:
Manage multiple engagements simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery and high-quality work.
Supervise, develop, and mentor staff and seniors; contribute to team training, especially in winery-specific tax topics.
Maintain strong working relationships with clients, including controllers, winemakers, CFOs, and ownership groups.
Identify opportunities for additional services, cross‑selling, and value‑add offerings within the wine and agribusiness ecosystem.
Support the firm’s presence in the wine industry through participation in events, associations, and thought leadership.
Assist in proposal development and onboarding of new clients.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
CPA license, EA or JD
5+ years of public accounting tax experience, with at least 2 years focused on wineries, vineyards, agribusiness, CPG, or manufacturing environments.
Demonstrated experience reviewing complex tax returns and managing staff.
Preferred:
Strong understanding of wine production cycles, agricultural cost accounting, UNICAP rules, and inventory costing.
Experience with multi-entity structures, family-owned operations, or private equity–backed wine businesses.
Familiarity with beverage alcohol regulatory requirements (TTB, excise taxes).
Experience with cloud-based accounting/tax software and workflow platforms.
