Systems Modeling Intern

AI overview

Collaborate with engineering teams to develop complex system models and enhance plant efficiencies using first-principles modeling techniques and custom software.

About Redwood Materials

Redwood is localizing a global battery supply chain that seamlessly integrates recovery, reuse, and recycling — keeping critical minerals in circulation and driving the energy transition. Founded in 2017, we’re delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have.

Essential Duties:

We are seeking a Systems Modeling Intern to assist in the development of our factories and battery refining & materials production processes. This intern will work with other software and systems engineers to help develop system models for the mechanical, thermal, and chemically reacting components of our systems and assist in system integration and execution. You’ll apply first-principles modeling techniques, likely implemented in custom software to develop plant scale models which can in turn be used to maximize system efficiencies, detect problems in the plant, and power soft sensors. The primary goal is to apply modeling techniques to design the most optimal factories in the world. To do so, you’ll collaborate cross-functionally with different stakeholders and design teams throughout the organization. This is a Summer 2026 position.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Implementing complex system design models which integrate mechanical, thermal, chemical, and control theories of operation, likely in custom software.
  • Integrate live data from the factory floor into such models and implement functionality to detect anomalies of failing equipment in the plant.
  • Navigate a highly cross-functional landscape of engineers to gather requirements, and work with stakeholders to provide solutions as they are required.
  • Provide modeling support to optimize plant efficiency.
  • Apply knowledge of motors, pumps, sensors, actuators, and thermodynamic systems to accurately model plant behavior in custom software / Simulink / Matlab and/or other modeling tools.
  • Provide high-level control strategy design, informed by simulation and data analytics.

 Desired Qualifications

  • Pursuing a B.S. or advanced degree in software engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics, materials science, or another discipline with significant relevant coursework.
  • Prior internship or relevant project/work experience with physical process modeling or controls systems.
  • Working knowledge of Python and/or simulation software packages, and functional software engineering skills.
  • Working knowledge of Simulink, Matlab, and/or FEA / CFD modeling tools.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, and thermodynamics first principles and fundamentals.
  • Understanding of mechanical, electrical, and thermodynamics first principles and fundamentals.
  • Readiness to work on complex system design.
  • Self-motivated, hands-on attitude, with a willingness to contribute at all levels.
  • A passion for sustainability and making the world a better place!

 Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform the essential job functions consistent safely and successfully with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards

Working Conditions:

  • Environment, such as office or outdoors.
  • Ability to work in challenging working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE, for extended periods of time.
  • Essential physical requirements, such as climbing, standing, stooping, or typing.
  • Occasional travel requirements.

The location of the internship is in the Reno, Nevada area. Interns are responsible for making their own housing and transportation arrangements. Please note that due to the location of our campuses, public transit options are limited, and the use of a personal or rented vehicle is recommended.

The position is full-time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
