Systems Engineering Intern, Compliance Coverage ML

AI overview

Lead the development of AI-driven internal tools for compliance analysis in a dynamic team setting, enhancing regulatory understanding through innovative technologies.

Who We Are

Nuro is a self-driving technology company on a mission to make autonomy accessible to all. Founded in 2016, Nuro is building the world’s most scalable driver, combining cutting-edge AI with automotive-grade hardware. Nuro licenses its core technology, the Nuro Driver™, to support a wide range of applications, from robotaxis and commercial fleets to personally owned vehicles. With technology proven over years of self-driving deployments, Nuro gives the automakers and mobility platforms a clear path to AVs at commercial scale—empowering a safer, richer, and more connected future.

About the Role

As a Systems Engineering Intern for Compliance Coverage ML, you will own and lead the development of internal tooling using Large Language Models (LLMs) to accelerate the analysis and usage of our onroad driving compliance framework. Working collaboratively with domain experts and under the guidance of senior team members, you will be hands-on in requirements identification, design, implementation, and deployment of tooling that leverages cutting-edge AI technologies and Nuro’s compliance data libraries. Your work will support tasks such as regulation classification, behavior feedback, driving requirement assessment, and regulatory query/knowledge retrieval. This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience at the intersection of AI and Systems compliance in the AV industry.

About the Work

  • Design and implement effective prompt engineering strategies to guide LLMs in generating actionable responses for Systems compliance tasks.
  • Develop Python code to interact with LLM APIs, access databases, and process inputs/outputs.
  • Collaborate with the team to build a deployable user interface and evaluate the tool’s effectiveness through iterative testing/refinement.
  • Regularly present progress, findings, and challenges to the project team.

About You

  • Pursuing a Bachelors, Masters, or Doctoral degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or a related field.
  • Experience in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) with a focus on prompting Large Language Models (LLMs), and reviewing and evaluating outputs to ensure quality and interpretability.
  • Ability to analyze the intent and applicability of laws, regulations, ordinances, acts, statutes, etc. in the scope of a specific system.
  • Strong problem solving, programming, and data analytics skills in Python and SQL.

Bonus Points

  • Understanding of the Vehicle/Transportation Code (driving laws) of any US state.
  • Experience with configuration management tools for requirements, documentation, and software (such as Jama, Polarion, Jira, Confluence, Git).
  • Utilized Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) techniques to enhance LLM outputs through connected databases.
  • Experience using LLMs in regulatory environments.
  • Familiarity with neural network and natural language processing (NLP) architectures.
  • Familiarity with ML applications and techniques, such as pre-processing, classification, and categorization tasks.
  • Ability to apply systems engineering concepts of requirements, verification, and validation.
  • Front-end/UI development experience.

Note: This is a summer internship that will require in-office presence of 3-4 days a week in our Mountain View, CA location.

For this position, the reasonably expected pay range is between $11,500 to $14,000/month. Your actual base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills.
