System Sales Engineer (Vortex Compnanies)

AI overview

Support the sale of complex dry bulk material handling systems by providing technical resource expertise and collaborating closely with customers to define system concepts.

The System Sales Engineer supports the sale of dry bulk material handling systems, with a primary focus on railcar and truck loading applications. While loading spouts and discharge points are often the final stage of these systems, this role also supports upstream equipment—including bin discharge devices, air gravity conveyors, and other material flow components—to ensure complete systems operate reliably and efficiently.

This position is centered on front-end application support and technical sales, working closely with customers to define system concepts, clarify scope, and align expectations early in the sales process. The System Sales Engineer serves as a technical resource during system development, while detailed engineering and final system design are completed by dedicated engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities:

Sales & Application Support:

    • Act as a technical sales and application resource for dry bulk material handling systems.
    • Work with customers to understand material properties, process goals, flow requirements, and operating constraints.
    • Support sales efforts related to railcar loading, truck loading, and upstream material flow.
    • Participate in customer meetings, site visits, and application reviews to develop solution concepts.
    • Assist in positioning solutions that improve flow reliability, safety, and operational efficiency.

System Concept & Scope Definition:

Support definition of system-level concepts involving:

  • Fill Efficiency Devices.
  • Railcar and truck loading spouts and positioners.
  • Bin discharge devices, feeders, and gates.
  • Air gravity conveyors and related flow equipment.
  • Interfaces with mechanical or pneumatic conveying systems.
  • Dust control and material containment.
  • Control Systems.
  • Review customer layouts, P&IDs, and specifications to identify system interfaces and constraints.
  • Provide application guidance on equipment selection without owning detailed calculations or final engineering.

Upstream Equipment Awareness:

  • Maintain general working knowledge of:
  • Air gravity conveyor systems and operating principles.
  • Bin activators, slide gates, rotary valves, diverters, and feeders.
  • Common bulk material flow challenges (flooding, rat-holing, segregation, dusting).
  • Help customers and sales teams understand how upstream equipment choices impact downstream loading performance.

Controls & Automation Coordination:

  • Maintain familiarity with industrial automation concepts related to bulk handling systems.
  • Assist in gathering customer requirements for sensors, interlocks, and loading sequences.
  • Coordinate with controls and engineering teams to communicate functional expectations.
  • Support clarification of control-related scope during the proposal and order process.

Proposal & Cross-Functional Support:

  • Assist with development of technical content for proposals, including:
  • Equipment descriptions and options.
  • Application assumptions and exclusions.
  • Interface definitions between equipment and systems.
  • Support project handoff from sales to engineering at order kickoff.
  • Participate in customer clarification calls during project execution as needed.

Internal & Market Feedback:

  • Share application feedback and lessons learned with engineering and product teams.
  • Provide insight into customer needs, industry trends, and competitive solutions.
  • Support development of application standards, training materials, and sales tools.

Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline or equivalent industry experience.
  • 3–8 years of experience in dry bulk material handling, industrial equipment sales, or applications support.
  • General understanding ofbulk solids behavior and material flow.
  • Familiarity with upstream equipment such as air gravity conveyors, bin discharge devices, feeders, and gates.
  • Basic understanding of industrial control systems and automation concepts.
  • Ability to read and interpret equipment layouts and system drawings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with integrated bulk handling systems supporting loading operations.
  • Exposure to industries such as cement, aggregates, minerals, chemicals, plastics, or food ingredients.
  • Experience supporting customers, EPCs, or system integrators.
  • Plant or field experience in industrial environments.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Application-focused, solution-oriented mindset.
  • Comfortable operating in a supporting engineering role, not owning detailed design.
  • Organized, responsive, and detail-oriented.
  • Willingness to travel for customer and site support.
