As a System Engineer on the CMS Common Working File (CWF) program, you’ll support one of CMS’s core Medicare claims processing platforms by bridging legacy mainframe systems with modern Java-based components. You’ll play a key role in analyzing how data flows through VSAM files and COBOL programs, supporting release activities, and helping ensure reliable delivery of integrated application components. This role focuses on deep system understanding, technical analysis, and hands-on support across both mainframe and Java environments in a highly mission-critical system.

What you'll be doing:

  • Analyze and research VSAM file structures and COBOL program behavior to support system enhancements and troubleshooting
  • Investigate data flows and application logic across mainframe components
  • Support and maintain JCL as needed for batch processing and job execution
  • Build, verify, and deploy Java artifacts packaged as TAR files as part of release activities
  • Partner with development and operations teams to support build and deployment processes
  • Assist with production issue analysis and resolution
  • Document system behavior, integration points, and release procedures
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support ongoing modernization and system stability

What you’ll bring:

  • Strong analytical experience with mainframe systems, including VSAM and COBOL
  • Working knowledge of JCL
  • Familiarity with Java applications, including building and deploying packaged components (TAR files)
  • Ability to understand and support integrations between legacy mainframe systems and modern application components
  • Experience researching complex systems and translating findings into actionable insights
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Clear written and verbal communication
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with technical teams
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

United States Wage Range: $90,000 – $130,000
