Position Summary
This role holds primary responsibility for the daily operation of the laboratory, including planning, organizing and coordinating the shift activities within the laboratory.

Duties

  • Maintains responsibility for the direct supervision of assigned laboratory personnel, ensuring compliance with collective agreement provisions, legislative requirements and professional initiatives in all facets of laboratory operations
  • Coordinates the delivery of professional development programs, and develops and maintains an authoritative knowledge of trends and level of competence in area of responsibility
  • Assists in the development, implementation and maintenance of policies and procedures of the Clinical Laboratory, in consultation with the Laboratory Manager, Medical Director, or designate and ensures adherence to Hospital policies and procedures within the laboratory
  • Ensures staff compliance with quality requirements and standards
  • Participates in the preparation and monitoring of the operational and capital budget in conjunction with the Laboratory Manager; assists with preparation of the capital budget in consultation with the Medical Director and Laboratory Manager
  • Maintains responsibility for laboratory equipment and products, ensuring that all laboratory equipment is properly validated and maintained
  • Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) with a Cytogenetics/Molecular Genetics specialization, required
  • Bachelor's degree in Science or Business or Health Administration (or a recognized equivalent) required, a Master's degree, is an asset
  • Minimum four years practical and related experience in a clinical genetics and/or HLA laboratory setting, required
  • Two (2) years supervisory (formal or informal) experience in a laboratory setting required
  • Experience with Epic Beaker and with other laboratory information systems (i.e. Clarity LIMS, Histotrack) is an asset
  • Experience validating, performing and troubleshooting current clinical genetics and/or clinical HLA testing methodologies and related equipment, required
  • Experience developing effective workflows and aligning staff to workload is an asset
  • Ability to develop and deliver educational programs and training sessions, preferred
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirement and standards for clinical genetics and/or HLA laboratories, preferred
  • Strong project management skills including planning, execution and monitoring of projects along with a proven track record to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines preferred 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively liaise with clients and stakeholders 
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a rapidly evolving landscape
