The Role
We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join SoFi’s Member Insights engineering team, where we’re designing the future of personal finance. Today, we help millions of members find their path to financial independence by providing the tools, resources, and guidance they need to succeed. The team currently owns several high-impact, customer-facing experiences, including Relay and Credit Score Monitoring. Looking ahead, our focus is on delivering personalized financial insights—building systems that ingest and learn from billions of financial data points to generate actionable, timely next steps for our members throughout their financial journey.
The ideal candidate is collaborative, product-minded, and pragmatic, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability for both code quality and the end-to-end product experience. At SoFi, close partnership across Product, Design, and Engineering is core to how we work, and you will be involved throughout the entire product lifecycle—from ideation and design to implementation, deployment, and continuous improvement. We also value a culture of continuous learning, and you will be encouraged to invest in your own growth while mentoring and supporting fellow team members.
What you’ll do
-
Architect Strategy: Drive the long-term technical vision and architecture for the team, ensuring our systems are scalable, resilient, and extensible.
-
Technical Leadership: Lead cross-functional discussions to bridge the gap between complex distributed systems and seamless member experiences.
-
Elevate Excellence: Set the "gold standard" for code quality, system design, and testing across the team. You will lead high-stakes design reviews and provide feedback that levels up the entire engineering org.
-
Product Partnership: Translate product goals into phased technical roadmaps, balancing the need for rapid delivery with long-term architectural health.
-
Mentor & Multiply: Actively mentor senior and mid-level engineers. Help grow the team through hiring.
-
Innovate: Consistently demonstrate extremely high levels of technical knowledge, ingenuity, and creativity. Develop and apply advanced technologies, engineering principles, theories, and concepts.
-
Navigate Ambiguity: Thrive in a fast-paced environment by breaking down complex, vaguely defined problems into executable milestones.
What you’ll need
-
Proven Impact: 6+ years of professional software engineering experience on a modern tech stack.
-
JVM Mastery: 4+ years of deep expertise in Java or Kotlin. (Our core stack is Kotlin / Spring / PostgreSQL).
-
System Design at Scale: Experience designing and operating microservices in a high-traffic environment.
-
Data Fluency: Deep understanding of relational or no-SQL databases.
-
Product Intuition: A pragmatic approach to engineering; you prioritize shipping value to members over "perfect" code or architecture.
-
Ownership Mentality: You don't just "complete tickets"—you own the reliability, performance, and success of the product from ideation to production.
-
Experience and enthusiasm for leveraging LLM/AI tools to increase your efficiency as an engineer.
Nice to have
-
Domain Expertise: Interest and experience in personal finance
- Full-stack development experience that includes familiarity with React or Flutter
