AI overview

Drive the design and execution of high-impact systems for autonomous vehicle operations, collaborating cross-functionally to enhance fleet performance and safety.

Who we are

Aurora’s mission is to deliver the benefits of self-driving technology safely, quickly, and broadly.

The Aurora Driver will create a new era in mobility and logistics, one that will bring a safer, more efficient, and more accessible future to everyone.

At Aurora, you will tackle massively complex problems alongside other passionate, intelligent individuals, growing as an expert while expanding your knowledge. For the latest news from Aurora, visit aurora.tech or follow us on LinkedIn.

Aurora hires talented people with diverse backgrounds who are ready to help build a transportation ecosystem that will make our roads safer, get crucial goods where they need to go, and make mobility more efficient and accessible for all.

The Fleet Intelligence team sits at the center of Aurora’s mission to deploy safe, commercial-scale autonomous driving. We build the platforms that unify data across vehicles, cloud systems, and operators—turning real-world signals into the insights and capabilities that power autonomy, optimize fleet operations, and accelerate scale.

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will drive the design and execution of high-impact distributed systems and services that serve as the backbone of Aurora’s operational and autonomy ecosystems. You will own complex architectures end-to-end, influence technical direction across teams, and mentor engineers as we build systems that operate reliably at real-world commercial scale.

In this role, you will

  • Architect and build high-availability, mission-critical systems capable of processing real-time telemetry from autonomous vehicles as well as large-scale offline datasets used for autonomy training, evaluation, and fleet optimization.
  • Drive technical strategy and architectural direction for core Fleet Intelligence systems, influencing service boundaries, data models, reliability patterns, storage strategies, and operational best practices.
  • Design systems from idea through production, ensuring robustness, performance, and developer-friendly interfaces.
  • Raise the engineering bar by mentoring senior engineers, contributing to design and code reviews, and driving adoption of best practices in architecture, testing, reliability, and observability.
  • Partner with Autonomy, Cloud Infrastructure, Product, and Operations to align technical roadmaps, clarify requirements, and deliver scalable solutions that support deployment and continuous improvement of Aurora’s autonomous fleet.

Required Qualifications:

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of experience building and operating large-scale backend or distributed systems.
  • Deep expertise in distributed systems design, API design, scalable service architecture, and data modeling.
  • Proven experience owning system architecture end-to-end, making strategic technical decisions, and driving multi-team engineering initiatives.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to partner effectively across engineering and operational domains.
  • Proficiency with Golang, cloud infrastructure, and operational tooling (e.g., AWS, Kubernetes, CI/CD, observability stacks).

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience leading multi-team architectural initiatives and defining long-term technical roadmaps.
  • Knowledge of autonomous vehicles, robotics, fleet systems, or large-scale real-time data processing.
  • Experience with integrating third-party APIs, external data sources, or partner ecosystems.

The base salary range for this position is $189,000-$303,000. Aurora’s pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, the successful candidate’s starting base pay will be determined based on factors including job-related skills, experience, qualifications, relevant education or training, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future. The successful candidate will also be eligible for an annual bonus, equity compensation, and benefits.
