The Staff Software Development Engineer in Test is a senior individual contributor responsible for advancing product quality through deep technical execution, test strategy influence, and strong collaboration across Engineering and Product. This role builds upon Senior SDET expectations by operating with broader system awareness, higher technical judgment, and increased ownership of test frameworks, quality signals, and testing standards.

The Staff SDET focuses primarily on hands-on execution while also influencing test strategy, quality practices, and technical direction across teams through expertise rather than formal authority. The role contributes to defining what “good quality” looks like in practice and helps drive consistency, scalability, and reliability in how the product is tested and released.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Test Strategy and Quality Focus: Develops a deep understanding of product functionality, system architecture, and customer usage patterns to inform testing approaches. Contributes to test strategy by identifying quality risks, gaps in coverage, and opportunities to improve confidence in releases. Influences broader testing direction through technical leadership and collaboration rather than ownership of formal approval gates.
  • Test Development and Execution: Designs, implements, and maintains high-quality automated tests across appropriate layers, including API, integration, and system-level testing. Continuously evaluates existing test coverage, strengthens weak areas, and reduces redundant or low-value tests. Executes tests as needed to validate changes and support release readiness.
  • Test Automation and CI Integration: Builds and maintains reliable, maintainable automated test suites integrated into CI pipelines. Improves test stability, execution speed, and signal quality to support fast and safe development workflows. Works closely with engineers to ensure tests run effectively across branches and environments.
  • Load, Performance, and Reliability Testing: Executes existing load and performance tests, reviews and reports results, and maintains the test suite as needed. Partners with Load and Performance test engineers who own performance test creation and expansion.
  • Technical Design and Problem Solving: Contributes to technical design discussions from a quality and testability perspective. Dives deep into complex systems to diagnose issues, understand failure modes, and identify root causes. Proposes pragmatic improvements to architecture, testing approaches, or tooling to reduce long-term quality risk.
  • Metrics, Insights, and Continuous Improvement: Helps define and evolve test and quality metrics that provide meaningful insight into system health and testing effectiveness. Uses data to guide decisions, prioritize improvements, and surface systemic issues. Contributes to documentation, runbooks, and best practices that improve team efficiency and consistency.
  • Collaboration and Influence: Works closely with Engineering and Product partners to ensure quality considerations are addressed throughout the development lifecycle. Influences testing standards, practices, and tooling adoption through example, technical credibility, and constructive collaboration.
  • Adheres to all confidentiality and compliance regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education & Work Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10 to 12 years of experience in software development and testing, with a strong background in automated testing and software engineering.

Key Skills and Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as C# or Java, with the ability to read and contribute to production-quality code
  • Experience testing APIs and services using tools such as Postman or similar API testing tools
  • Experience working in cloud-based environments such as AWS or similar platforms
  • Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and working within modern development workflows
  • Familiarity with test management, defect tracking, and collaboration tools such as Jira or similar systems
  • Strong ability to analyze complex systems, diagnose root causes, and communicate technical findings clearly
  • Ability to influence testing practices and quality improvements through technical leadership rather than formal authority
