Staff Product Designer, Grafana Datasources

This is a remote position. We are looking for candidates in Sweden.

About Grafana Labs

As a Staff Product Designer at Grafana Labs, you will join a growing Product Design organization of more than 25 designers, researchers, and design leaders distributed across six continents. You will work within a 100% remote R&D organization, so strong, proactive remote communication, collaboration, facilitation, and relationship building skills will be essential to your success.

Grafana is an open-source visualization platform that helps users understand their systems and data through customizable dashboards and alerts. Within the Grafana department, the Data Sources group mission is to give users the capability to connect to and query our vast library of data sources. We want users to be able to leverage Grafana to view their infrastructure as well as the lifecycle of their software easily and in a composable fashion. We aim for users to onboard and reach insights from this data quickly, ensuring robust adoption and encouraging users to start using all the capabilities of the Grafana platform.

The Opportunity:

As Staff Product Designer for Grafana’s Data Sources group, you’ll get to make the lives of highly-technical people easier, reducing cognitive load and getting your users to results faster. Your work will guide users through all the required steps to query data at scale across all of these data sources, and you will contribute to taking the experience to the next level: Reducing friction, automation and creating agent-first experiences that get rolled out to millions of users. Together with your cross-functional partners, you will be able to define and drive product design strategy and work on large-scale, high-impact projects. One concrete upcoming challenge is experimenting with ways to improve the Data Sources experience at scale and to quickly roll out design changes to 150+ data sources. You also get to pioneer new ways of designing and running data-informed methodologies, including designing for and working with cutting-edge AI tooling.

Collaboration is at the heart of what we do. Our team has many collaborators, and we like to talk to our users early and often. Our work is in a mix of open source and proprietary software, bringing some community engagement. Close collaboration with Engineering, Product, Docs, and Customer experience teams is something you will regularly engage in.

You'll also have the opportunity to work across the Data Sources group and partner with other squads within the Grafana division to drive innovation and solve complex product and design challenges.

Simultaneously, you will contribute to the evolution of the Product Design team at Grafana by coaching and mentoring other designers, collaborating on team internal initiatives, and helping evolve new ways of working, learning, and having fun together as the team scales and we uplevel how we work using AI tooling.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Help Grafana users and agents connect and query data in Grafana quickly and effectively
  • Ship quickly and prioritise for delivering impact while balancing business priorities, customer wishes and technical considerations, challenging your peers to deliver better results
  • Provide strategic design input for high-impact initiatives like rolling out design improvements at scale, improving query success and designing radical changes to how Grafana users experience their workflows
  • Work cross-functionally and create a vision for Data Sources with peers and leaders in engineering, product management, technical writing, and GTM functions, as well as other members of the Product Design team
  • Execute research and contribute to quantitative and qualitative research initiatives with researchers, cross-functional collaborators, customers, and members of the Grafana user community
  • Translate research and data to experiences that are easy to digest and break down complexity
  • Develop deep expertise in your product area and associated customer and user personas, use cases, and workflows that will enable you to make a meaningful impact on the user experience your product delivers to Grafana customers
  • Document user needs and pain points, design directions, UX tradeoffs, and detailed designs for specific features and enhancements

What Makes You a Great Fit:

  • 7+ years of relevant design experience working on B2B/enterprise software products, ideally designing tools and services for developers or other highly technical users
  • Ability to synthesize business and product strategic priorities, customer feedback, research insights, and technical considerations into pragmatic, cohesive, scalable design solutions
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams across multiple locations and time-zones to iteratively ship and evolve products while keeping the end design vision in mind
  • Experience running qualitative research in complex fields, building empathy with users and humans, their needs and pain points even when you have very little in common with them
  • Experience working in a fully-remote, fast-paced environment where you are expected to share openly, default to transparency, and embrace your autonomy

Bonus Points For:

  • Experience automating away monotonous work and/or designing for agent automation
  • Ability to rapidly gain an understanding of a technical domain and associated customer needs and user workflows in order to design effective experiences within that domain
  • Domain knowledge or experience related to observability, cloud infrastructure, and/or database monitoring, administration, and optimization

When you apply, please:

  • Provide an example of an experience where users automagically complete tasks and reach their goals with minimal effort. Add a sentence or two about what you believe makes it effective
