The Team 

Join the Marketplace Services (MPS) team as we continue our evolution from a service provider into a strategic platform enabler. Our purpose is to provide trustworthy data and shared services across APAC Candidate, Hirer and AI teams so we can deliver long-term customer value. 

Within MPS, the Profile, Apply and Jobs Services (PAJS) team provide shared capabilities that underpin many of SEEK’s core marketplace experiences: how candidates discover roles, create and manage profiles, and apply for jobs, and how hirers create, manage and optimise job ads. These services sit at the heart of SEEK’s Employment Marketplace and are consumed at scale across the group. 

The Role 

As a Staff Engineer for Profile, Apply and Jobs (PAJS), you are the team’s senior technical authority. You design and deliver fit-for-purpose solutions, connect near-term decisions to PAJS’s long-term evolution, and ensure systems are reliable, secure, performant, and cost-effective. You collaborate with product and engineering leadership to shape the technical roadmap, build strong cross-team relationships, and uplift engineering craft through mentorship and high standards. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Lead the technical design and implementation of services and APIs using modern cloud-native patterns (event-driven, messaging, resilient integrations). 
  • Serve as the technical escalation point, diagnosing complex issues and owning production incidents through resolution, including post-incident improvements. 
  • Establish and maintain operational excellence: observability, alerting, incident response readiness, and continuous reliability/performance/security improvements. 
  • Drive platform health by reducing technical debt, simplifying architectures, and meeting agreed technical metrics. 
  • Run technical discovery and spikes to de-risk major changes and translate outcomes into actionable plans for the squad. 
  • Align interfaces and contracts with customer teams to create clear, composable integrations and reduce friction. 
  • Mentor and coach engineers through pairing, design reviews, and constructive feedback, raising standards in system design, debugging, DevOps, and secure coding. 
  • Contribute to SEEK’s engineering community through guilds, mentoring, hiring, and communities of practice.

This is a rare opportunity to be a Staff-level technical leader in a niche but highly leveraged space, shaping critical Profile, Apply and Jobs Services capabilities that underpin SEEK’s growth and innovation across APAC. 

We’re looking for a Staff Engineer who combines deep hands-on engineering skills with strong technical leadership within a team. 

You’ll bring: 

  • Proven experience as a staff engineer or similar level role designing and delivering large, complex features or systems in a modern, distributed environment. 
  • Strong system design and architecture skills, able to define the architectural vision for a team, make pragmatic trade-offs and evolve systems iteratively. 
  • Hands-on engineering expertise, ideally including:
    - TypeScript/JavaScript and modern backend frameworks. 
    - Cloud-native architectures, preferably on AWS  
    - Event-driven and messaging-based integrations. 
  • Track record of uplifting engineering practices - testing, code quality, security-by-default, observability and CI/CD in your team. 
  • Strong influence and collaboration skills, able to work closely with Engineering Managers, Product Managers, designers and peers in other teams to align on goals and solutions. 
  • Mentoring and coaching experience, growing engineers through pairing, feedback and design guidance, and contributing to a healthy, inclusive team culture.
