Staff Backend Engineer, PHP + Go - remote - Europe

As a Staff Backend Engineer, you will take ownership of critical backend systems, building robust, scalable, and high-performing solutions that power integrations with key partners. You will collaborate closely with Product Managers, UX designers, and engineering peers to translate business requirements into technical solutions while maintaining architectural quality and long-term scalability. This role offers the opportunity to influence technical strategy, mentor engineers, and drive continuous improvement in software practices. You will work in a fully remote, dynamic environment across European time zones, contributing to complex projects, optimizing workflows, and supporting the technical growth of your team. Your expertise will ensure reliable and efficient systems that impact thousands of users and support key business objectives.

Accountabilities:

• Lead and contribute to the design, development, and optimization of backend systems using PHP and Go.
• Collaborate with Product Managers to define technical solutions that address business needs and priorities.
• Mentor and support team members through code reviews, pairing, and guidance on best practices.
• Maintain architectural quality, address technical debt, and ensure scalability and reliability of systems.
• Design and implement RESTful APIs and event-driven architectures using Domain Driven Design principles.
• Support testing practices, including unit tests and integration tests, to ensure robust and maintainable code.
• Engage in continuous improvement of development processes, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps practices.

Requirements

• 6+ years of experience in SaaS software development, with at least 2 years in a leadership or senior engineering role.
• Expert-level proficiency in backend development, with strong experience or willingness to dive into PHP and Go.
• Solid understanding of relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL) and familiarity with NoSQL databases (DynamoDB, MongoDB) a plus.
• Experience designing RESTful APIs and working in event-driven service architectures.
• Strong testing practices, including unit and integration testing frameworks.
• Experience working in cloud environments (AWS preferred) and familiarity with message queues.
• Familiarity with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and DevSecOps practices is a plus.
• Excellent English communication skills (C1 level) and ability to work with distributed teams.
• Leadership skills with experience mentoring and coaching engineers.
