We are seeking an SSRS / Power BI Engineer to support the modernization of enterprise reporting platforms for a large healthcare organization.
This role focuses on reverse-engineering a legacy SSRS reporting estate and translating it into modern Power BI solutions, including interactive dashboards and paginated reports that require pixel-perfect formatting.
This is a hands-on engineering role requiring deep expertise in SSRS, T-SQL, and Power BI, along with strong analytical skills to understand and preserve complex business logic during migration.
You will partner closely with data, analytics, and GenAI engineering teams to ensure functional parity, performance optimization, and secure, governed delivery of reporting solutions.
Responsibilities
Analyze and reverse engineer an existing SSRS reporting estate, including RDLs, shared datasets, data sources, subscriptions, and dependencies.
Extract and document report logic from SSRS, including parameters, expressions, grouping, drill-through behavior, subreports, conditional formatting, and embedded code.
Translate SSRS datasets and T-SQL logic into Power BI solutions using Power Query, DAX, and optimized data models.
Rebuild SSRS pixel-perfect reports as Power BI reports and dashboards or as Power BI paginated reports where strict layout fidelity is required.
Partner with GenAI engineering teams to refine prompts, retrieval context, and guardrails that support accurate conversion of report definitions and business rules.
Define and implement reporting governance standards, including naming conventions, certified datasets, semantic models, workspace structure, and documentation.
Implement security and access controls in Power BI, including row-level security, workspace permissions, and data sensitivity labeling.
Validate functional parity between SSRS and Power BI outputs through reconciliations, golden datasets, automated checks, and stakeholder sign-offs.
Optimize reporting performance through SQL tuning, data model optimization, aggregation strategies, incremental refresh, and capacity planning.
Support UAT, training, and adoption through user enablement, report catalogs, release notes, and post-migration stabilization.
Required Expereince
3+ years of hands-on experience developing SSRS reports in enterprise environments.
Hands-on experience with Power BI, including Power Query, DAX, data modeling, and workspace management.
Strong proficiency in T-SQL, including complex joins, window functions, CTEs, stored procedures, and performance considerations.
Deep understanding of SSRS report design concepts, including parameters, expressions, grouping, sorting, drilldown, and formatting.
Experience working with SQL Server objects such as views, stored procedures, and indexing fundamentals.
Familiarity with SSRS deployment and operations, including Report Manager or Web Portal, shared data sources, shared datasets, and subscriptions.
Strong debugging and validation skills to reconcile data, validate outputs, and resolve defects.
Preferred Experience
Experience building Power BI paginated reports using Power BI Report Builder.
Exposure to SSAS (Tabular or Multidimensional) as part of a broader BI ecosystem.
Experience modernizing or migrating reporting platforms from legacy tools to Power BI.
Familiarity with data warehouse concepts such as facts, dimensions, and star schemas.
Exposure to SSIS or other ETL tools.
Experience with basic automation or scripting for deployments.
Familiarity with row-level security patterns and audit requirements.
