Position Summary

The Speech-Language Pathologist is an integral member of our acute care team, providing expert assessment and treatment for adults with communication and swallowing disorders following neurosurgery and spine procedures, while collaborating in a progressive, interprofessional environment. The successful candidate will work in a progressive multi-professional team, participate in rounds, meetings and quality initiatives and assist with coverage across other clinical service areas as necessary. The candidate will perform all other duties as required. 

Duties

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of communication, cognitive‑communication, and swallowing (dysphagia) abilities for adults following neurosurgery and spine procedures.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans based on clinical findings and patient goals.
  • Monitor patient progress, reassess as needed, and adjust clinical interventions accordingly.
  • Provide evidence‑based intervention for acute care patients, including those with complex neurological conditions.
  • Participate actively in interprofessional team rounds, case discussions, and care conferences.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and other clinicians to ensure coordinated and holistic patient care.
  • Provide recommendations related to communication and swallowing safety, including diet texture modifications and communication strategies.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete clinical documentation in accordance with hospital guidelines and CASLPO standards.
  • Prepare written and verbal reports to communicate assessment results and treatment recommendations to both the care team and patient/family.
  • Provide education, in-services, and professional presentations for interprofessional colleagues, students, and other stakeholders as required.
  • Offer patient and family education regarding communication strategies, swallowing safety, and care plans.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, including the Regulated Health Professions Act (1991) and CASLPO regulations.
  • Follow best practices in patient safety, infection control, and acute care clinical protocols.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, program development, and clinical practice enhancements within Allied Health.
  • Provide coverage and support to other clinical service areas within Allied Health as needed.
  • Adapt to rotating weekend shifts and flexible scheduling to meet patient care needs.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Manager, Allied Health & Geriatrics.
  • Masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology or equivalent
  • Registration with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO)
  • 2 years experience in an acute care hospital, preferred
  • Experience in the assessment and treatment of neurosurgery, spine, general internal medicine, and stroke population, preferred
  • Experience in professional education, presentation and in-services, preferred
  • Recognizes and acts within the scope of practice of a speech-language pathologist
  • Understanding of health care teams and how the skills and competencies of all members contribute toward patient management
  • Compliance with legislation outlined in Regulation of Health Professions Act (1991)
