Software Engineering Manager

Warszawa , Poland
full-time

AI overview

Lead the development of a next-generation location-intelligence backend, managing vast datasets and delivering real-time geospatial insights through scalable APIs.

We're looking for an experienced Software Engineering Manager responsible for architecting, delivering, and operating the next-generation location-intelligence backend that powers Nearmap’s core products and customer APIs.

This includes managing over 100PB of aerial imagery, AI-derived datasets, and geospatial content via performant, scalable APIs and distributed systems. The role balances deep technical execution with people leadership to deliver low latency and robust data infrastructure.
You’ll contribute to a platform that processes petabytes of high-resolution aerial imagery, powers advanced AI models, and delivers real-time geospatial insights to customers worldwide. You’ll work on systems that handle everything from large-scale data ingestion and processing to intelligent content delivery through robust APIs and customer-facing applications. This is a unique opportunity to help shape the backbone of an end-to-end platform where performance, scalability, and innovation are critical. You’ll play a vital role in building reliable, secure, and high-performing APIs that enable access to geospatial intelligence at scale—supporting industries as they make critical, data-driven decisions. As part of our new engineering hub in Warsaw, you’ll help define foundational API practices and contribute to the evolution of a system that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible with location intelligence.

You’ll be part of a team that values technical excellence, autonomy, and meaningful impact—working together to build systems that make a real difference for our users.

  • Proven experience leading backend engineering teams delivering scalable, production-grade APIs and platform services.
  • Demonstrated success in building and maintaining distributed systems and data-access platforms in a cloud environment.
  • Strong expertise in backend technologies including Go or C#.
  • Deep understanding of API design, cloud-native architectures (such as microservices, containers, events) preferably on AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD, and observability tooling.
  • Strong understanding of system performance, scalability, and distributed architecture patterns.
  • Exposure to big-data and streaming frameworks (e.g. Spark, Kafka, Iceberg/Delta Lake, Flink) and geospatial content formats (e.g. COGs, vector tiles, point clouds) is a plus.
  • Empathetic and inclusive leader with strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Proactive, pragmatic, and committed to high standards of technical excellence.
  • Comfortable working across time zones and distributed teams.
  • Comfortable making well-informed trade-offs between product delivery timelines, requirements and technical constraints.
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, with a comprehensive understanding of backend development principles, software architecture, and design patterns.

    You will:

  • Champion the evolution of Nearmap’s geospatial data platform, including distributed imagery storage, AI data pipelines, and content delivery optimisation.
  • Ensure sub-second latency and high-throughput performance across customer-facing APIs and internal services.
  • Lead operational strategy for cost-effective scaling, system reliability, and observability.
