Software Engineer, Synthetic Data Generation

To create these experiences, we collaborate with executives, value engineering, product management, product marketing, enablement, event and industry teams.  We use cutting-edge tools and techniques to explore the boundaries of the Celonis platform and then push the limits to bring our vision to life.   

The Role:

We are looking for a skilled software engineer to tackle a unique and fascinating challenge: creating the engine that powers our product demonstrations. Your mission will be to lead our Demo Automation efforts, starting with designing and building our next-generation tool to generate complex, synthetic event-log datasets.

These are not just random rows of data. The tools you develop will need to create rich, believable datasets that mirror the intricate processes running within enterprise systems like SAP, Oracle, and Salesforce. They will empower our value engineers, product managers, and marketing teams to define desired outcomes—such as specific KPIs, financial metrics, or process bottlenecks—and generate the perfect dataset to tell a powerful story.

This is a high-impact role that sits at the intersection of software engineering, data science, and business process modeling. You will have the autonomy to design solutions from the ground up and will see your work directly influence the success of our sales and marketing efforts.

For this role, you will need to be able to operate with a high degree of autonomy, be disciplined, self-motivated, and keen to stretch your skills in new directions to solve unique–and sometimes bewildering–challenges.

The work you’ll do:

• Design and Build: Architect, develop, and maintain a robust and user-friendly data generation framework using modern software engineering practices.
• Model Complex Processes: Develop programmatic models that simulate real-world business processes (e.g., Order-to-Cash, Procure-to-Pay, Lead-to-Opportunity) and their variations.
• Reverse-Engineer from Metrics: Implement the core logic that allows users to specify target metrics (e.g., "average case duration of 5.2 days," "rework rate of 15%," "total invoice value of $1.2B") and generate a dataset that accurately reflects these outputs when processed by the Celonis platform.
• Ensure Realism: Apply statistical methods and simulation techniques to introduce realistic noise, variations, and complexities into the generated data, making it indistinguishable from real-world customer data.
• Collaborate Across Teams: Work closely with value engineering, product management and product marketing to understand their needs and translate them into features for the data generation tools.
• Own the Lifecycle: Manage the entire project lifecycle from requirements gathering and design to implementation, testing, and documentation, ensuring the tools are accessible to a wide range of internal users.
• Drive the Product: Provide feedback into product management on enhancements and features that would improve our ability to automate demos.  
• Stay Ahead: Anticipate future product releases and build tools to support them, timed to coincide with their release dates.   

The qualifications you need:

• Strong Software Engineering Foundation: 2-4 years of professional software development experience, with a  high level of proficiency in Python. 
• Data Modeling & Simulation Experience: Proven experience in building data models, running simulations, or applying statistical modeling to solve complex problems. You think naturally in terms of distributions, state machines, and stochastic processes.
• Analytical Problem-Solving: A talent for breaking down abstract, complex problems into manageable, implementable components. You are excited by the challenge of "working backward" from a solution to create the underlying data.
• Solid Data Skills: Experience querying and manipulating large datasets using SQL.
• Excellent Communication Skills: The ability to effectively collaborate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders to gather requirements and explain your solutions.
• Autonomy and Ownership: A self-starter mentality with the ability to drive projects forward independently and make critical design decisions.

Bonus Points (Highly Desirable)

• Process Mining/BPM Expertise: Familiarity with process mining concepts (event logs, case IDs, activities, timestamps) or Business Process Management (BPM).
• Enterprise Systems Knowledge: Experience with or a conceptual understanding of the data structures and business processes within ERP/CRM systems like SAP, Oracle, Salesforce, or Workday.
• Full-Stack Acumen: Experience building user interfaces or APIs to make your tools accessible to others.
• Cloud Experience: Familiarity with deploying applications and managing data in a cloud environment (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
