Software Engineer- Regional Expansion Payments Platform (Java)

£65,000 – £85,000 per year

TLDR

Contribute to building a reliable payment integrations platform facilitating 100+ unique payment schemes for global users while ensuring compliance and high transaction speed.

The team you’ll be joining the Payment Integrations Platform here our goal is to provide a reliable and scalable platform integrating payment schemes of the world into Wise. 

The platform is used by all the regional engineers and supports 100+ integrations currently, including a number of direct payment scheme integrations.

All cross-border (and more) transfers of Wise are going through this platform.

  • You’ll have onboarded and found your place through understanding your team and tribe vision and how you can contribute 

  • You’ll understand how our values can help you guide your work 

  • You’ll understand the reasons behind problematic payments and customer difficulties and how to go about solving them 

  • You’ll be raising the automation level to enable scaling of the product

  • Understand our customers and the impact our product makes in their lives. You’ll help us scale-up and build a world class money transfer product by finding solutions to our technical challenges and opportunities

You will be central to unifying hundreds of complex, unique payment schemes and bank integrations into a single, compliant, and highly efficient platform. The primary responsibilities include managing integration complexity, ensuring continuous regulatory compliance, and maintaining high transaction speed and scalability to support Wise's growth. 

You will take part in on-call activities and you will be a key influencer who harmonises complex, conflicting requirements to drive maximum usability, reliability and performance.

What do you need?

  • Knowledge of Java and Spring Boot.

  • Experience working with relational databases, SQL query optimisation, and schema design.

  • A strong sense of ownership and excellent communication skills to drive cross-team projects.

  • Ability to work independently while also being a collaborative team player, frequently engaging in cross-team efforts.

  • The ability to break down complex projects into incremental milestones that deliver customer value.

  • Curiosity and a drive for continuous learning and improvement.

  • Adherence to and advocacy for best coding practices, continuous delivery, and code reviews.

  • A proven track record of leading technical initiatives and mentoring other engineers.

  • Good discipline and skill in producing written documentation and diagrams.

It would be a bonus if you also have:

  • Interest in using AI assisted coding tools such as Cursor or Claude Code

  • Knowledge of Node.JS / TypeScript /  React / Next.JS

  • Worked with i18n libraries and third party translation services

  • Good knowledge of observability stacks and tooling (e.g. Grafana, ELK, Prometheus, Tracing)

…but don’t worry we don’t expect you to know everything!

What the first six months in this role will look like:

  • You’ll have onboarded and found your place through understanding your team, squad and guild vision and how you can contribute

  • Understanding the Wise product, fintech space and our tech culture

  • You’ll have fully developed new features, from planning to release, and keep monitoring their adoption once live 

  • Gone through two quarterly plannings and proposed ideas to take your product further
