Software Engineer (Junior & Mid-level)

AI overview

Join a high-growth tech scaleup tackling inefficiencies in the $66 billion freight industry by developing innovative software solutions with PHP, Laravel, and modern web frameworks.

About Ofload and Our Mission

FreightTech is one of the most exciting spaces to be in right now, with the opportunity to transform one of the largest industries. Freight in Australia is a $66 billion market, yet it is analogue and has many inefficiencies: 30% of the time, trucks drive empty. Networks lack transparency, data flows are fragmented, and smaller transport operators face barriers to competing with the big players.

At Ofload, we’re changing how the freight industry operates and bringing it into the digital world. We leverage technology, data, and strategic partnerships to connect a growing roster of blue-chip customers with smaller, highly efficient transport operators. By reducing empty truck miles, improving visibility, and optimising supply chains, we’re driving smarter, greener, and more efficient operations that benefit businesses and the environment.

This isn’t just logistics—it’s FreightTech: a tech-powered transformation of an industry that is the backbone of the economy and touches everyone’s lives.

About the Role:

We are growing our engineering team and are looking for talented junior and mid-level software engineers across4 open roles to join the Ofload team.

Our Engineering team is given trust and autonomy to do great work. We work in small teams focused on specific features of our core platform, each with 4-5 Engineers including a Technical Lead. We work in a triad with Product Managers and Designers to solve problems for our customers.

At the core of our tech stack are PHP 8 and Laravel, serving JSON REST APIs to an SPA built with TypeScript, React, and our in-house design system, Sinble; as well as our integration API clients. Our core monolith is complemented by a small handful of microservices, and our data is stored in Postgres, S3, Redis and Typesense. We host our Kubernetes clusters on AWS, and embrace infra-as-code (Helm, Terraform). As we scale, we are evolving from a Gitflow-based, to a CI/CD-based way of working. We're looking for smart, driven engineers to help us scale these systems.

What you’ll do:

  • Work collaboratively in a small cross-functional squad (engineers, product, design) to build features that power Ofload’s core platform.
  • Develop and maintain high-quality, scalable backend services using PHP 8, Laravel, and REST APIs, and contribute to front-end components in TypeScript + React (depending on experience).
  • Contribute to code reviews, write clean and maintainable code, and continuously improve engineering standards and practices.
  • Write and maintain meaningful automated tests to ensure high-quality and reliable releases.
  • Learn and apply software design principles (e.g. MVC, REST and dependency injection) with guidance from senior engineers.
  • Participate in planning, refinement, and delivery alongside Backend, DevOps, Data, UI/UX, and QA.
  • Help debug production issues and contribute to improving reliability, observability, and overall system performance.
  • Grow your impact over time, taking ownership of features, understanding system behaviour, and contributing to architectural discussions as your experience increases.

Requirements for Junior:

  • 1–2 years of commercial experience building web applications (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Experience with at least one backend language and/or framework, such as PHP/Laravel, Ruby/Rails, Python/Django, NodeJS or similar.
  • Some experience with front-end frameworks (React, Vue, Angular) or willingness to learn React/TypeScript.
  • Understanding of REST APIs, relational databases, and basic software design principles.
  • Comfortable working in Linux/MacOS dev environments.

Requirements for Mid:

  • 2–5 years experience building and maintaining production systems.
  • Solid experience with PHP and Laravel, or strong expertise in another backend ecosystem with willingness to transition.
  • Practical experience with TypeScript/React or modern front-end frameworks.
  • Experience working with relational databases (preferably Postgres) and API-driven systems.
  • Good understanding of testing practices, version control (Git), and modern development workflows.
  • Ability to break down problems, propose solutions, and take ownership of features from conception to delivery.
  • Experience working in a cloud-based environment (AWS ideal) is a bonus, not a requirement.

Across both levels (core qualities we care about):

  • A passion for building great products and delivering value to customers.
  • A problem-solving mindset and willingness to dive into unfamiliar areas.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with engineers, product managers, and designers.
  • Curiosity, eagerness to learn, and a passion for solving problems with technology.
  • Alignment with Ofload’s mission and excitement about using technology to improve the logistics industry.

At Ofload we prioritise impact, aptitude and passion, so we’d encourage you to apply if you do not meet all the above criteria. When you apply, please let us know of any reasonable adjustments you may need during the interview process.
