Senior Software Engineer

Overview

The Senior Software Engineer will develop information systems by studying operations, designing, developing and installing software solutions, and supporting and developing the software team. You will lead a team of developers responsible for building new and supporting existing websites.

You have the ability to prioritize well, communicate clearly, and demonstrate a consistent track record of delivery with excellent software engineering skills. You combine creative engineering with high quality and a strong customer focus.

You’re comfortable working across multiple facets of a project and juggling several responsibilities at once. You bring strong analytical capability and the ability to create innovative solutions, and you’re highly motivated to grow your career in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop software solutions by studying information needs; conferring with users; studying systems flow, data usage and work processes; investigating problem areas; and following the software development lifecycle.
  • Determine operational feasibility by evaluating analysis, problem definition, requirements, solution development and proposed solutions.
  • Document and demonstrate solutions by developing documentation, flowcharts, layouts, diagrams, charts, code comments and clear code.
  • Prepare and install solutions by determining and designing system specifications, standards and programming.
  • Improve operations by conducting systems analysis and recommending changes in policies and procedures.
  • Stay current by studying state-of-the-art development tools, programming techniques and computing equipment; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; and participating in professional organizations.
  • Protect operations by keeping information confidential.
  • Provide information by collecting, analyzing and summarizing development and service issues.
  • Accomplish engineering and organizational mission by completing related results as needed.
  • Support and develop software engineers by providing advice, coaching and educational opportunities.
  • First and foremost, develop software our users need.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers.
  • Collaborate with the team to brainstorm and create new products.
  • Grow engineering teams by interviewing, recruiting and hiring.
  • Make informed decisions quickly and take ownership of services and applications at scale.
  • Work collaboratively with others to achieve goals.
  • Be a persistent, creative problem-solver and remain cool and effective in a crisis.
  • Stay on the leading edge of development practices.
  • Be passionate about great technologies, especially open source.
  • Understand business needs and know how to create the tools to manage them.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in an appropriate field of study.
  • 5+ years of experience as a software engineer.
  • Fluent with functional, imperative and object-oriented languages; knowledge of Java, Scala, Clojure or JavaScript is especially useful.
  • Strong OOP or functional programming and modeling skills.
  • 4+ years of professional web development experience.
  • Fluent in JavaScript and PHP.
  • Experience coding, testing and documenting Drupal themes and modules.
  • Experience working in an agile environment.
  • Experience building complex web systems delivered successfully to customers.
  • Ability to take a project from scoping requirements through launch.
  • Experience communicating with users, technical teams and management.
  • Experience with mission-critical, 24x7 systems.
  • Experience implementing and consuming large-scale web services.
  • Experience with workflow or ESB software.
  • Strong knowledge of software engineering best practices across the full SDLC.
  • Deep knowledge of the JVM and supporting tool ecosystem.
  • Eagerness and willingness to learn new technologies.
