Software Development Manager (Technical)

AI overview

Lead a fast-moving AI Security & Trust Infrastructure team to build scalable, distributed systems that enforce trust signals across AI models and connected devices.

Who we are

We're a leading, global security authority that's disrupting our own category.  Our encryption is trusted by the major ecommerce brands, the world's largest companies, the major cloud providers, entire country financial systems, entire internets of things and even down to the little things like surgically embedded pacemakers.  We help companies put trust - an abstract idea - to work. That's digital trust for the real world.

Job summary

We are building DigiCert’s AI Security & Trust Infrastructure team — a small, fast-moving engineering group that delivers enterprise-grade trust and security capabilities at startup speed. As a hands-on leader, you will lead 6–8 engineers to design and build distributed systems that publish, validate, and enforce trust signals across AI models, agents, repositories, and connected devices. You will bring a strong understanding of backend, infrastructure, and DevOps engineering disciplines— enabling you to guide architectural decisions, coach engineers, and deliver scalable, reliable systems. This role blends technical depth, architectural ownership, and delivery velocity— leading by example in building production-grade, secure, and observable services.

What you will do

  • Lead and mentor engineers to ship secure, production-grade features in fast, iterative releases.
  • Architect and review distributed microservices, data flows, and event-driven pipelines that scale globally.
  • Guide implementation of streaming and messaging systems (Kafka, NATS, or equivalent) and data layer design (SQL/NoSQL, caching, consistency patterns).
  • Oversee and participate in development of CI/CD automation, IaC, and observability tooling.
  • Define system SLOs, availability, and performance targets, ensuring high reliability and resilience.
  • Establish and enforce AI-accelerated engineering practices that enhance velocity while maintaining clarity and security.
  • Partner with product and enterprise stakeholders to translate customer needs into technical solutions.
  • Ensure the team practices end-to-end ownership — design, implementation, deployment, monitoring, and incident response.
  • Foster a high-velocity, low-friction delivery culture through blameless postmortems, technical debt transparency, and measurable progress.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Code Delivery: Commit-to-deploy average <3 days.
  • Feature Velocity: At least one production feature or improvement per engineer per sprint.
  • System Reliability: 99.9%+ SLO adherence, <24h mean rollback recovery.
  • Predictability: ≥90% sprint predictability with consistent delivery throughput.

What you will have

  • 8+ years in software engineering with 2+ years leading distributed or SaaS engineering teams.
  • Hands-on experience designing and developing distributed backend systems using Go, Python, or Rust.
  • Proven ability to architect microservices-based, event-driven applications at scale.
  • Deep understanding of streaming platforms (Kafka, NATS, or equivalent) and data layer design (Postgres, Redis, DynamoDB, or similar).
  • Strong grasp of DevOps fundamentals — Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, observability, and incident response.
  • Experience building multi-tenant architectures with security, compliance, and reliability in mind.
  • Familiarity with AI-accelerated development practices — improving team output with intelligent tooling and automation.
  • Excellent systems thinking, technical judgment, and ability to balance velocity with operational excellence.
  • Knowledge of security and trust systems (TLS, PKI, DANE, DNSSEC) is highly desirable.

Engineering Culture Commitments

  • Deliver fast, deliver safely: speed and quality coexist through automation and observability.
  • Own the full stack: from design to deployment, monitoring, and improvement.
  • Automate relentlessly: eliminate manual steps across testing, delivery, and recovery.
  • AI-assisted, human-led: use intelligent tools for speed, but rely on human judgment for design and rigor.
  • Neutral and interoperable: everything built integrates cleanly with any ecosystem.
