About This Role 

Launched in September 2023, our location in Silver Spring, MD, is already home to top local talent in behavioral health care. This interdisciplinary team of trailblazers will build our adolescent, and adult programs from the ground up alongside the leadership of well-established clinicians, psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and nurses working in PHP/IOP behavioral health care for the past decade

The Site Medical Director (SMD) serves as the senior psychiatric leader at the site, responsible for clinical quality, provider performance, and alignment with Compass Health Center’s system priorities. This role combines clinical leadership, operational partnership, and direct patient care, ensuring high-quality, accessible, and patient-centered psychiatric services. 

What You'll Do 

Clinical & Medical Leadership 

  • Provide direct oversight, mentorship, and performance management for site-based psychiatrists and nurse practitioners.
  • Champion, implement, and operationalize Compass Health Center’s admission criteria and evidence-based clinical practice standards at the site level.
  • Serve as a clinical leader and subject matter expert for complex case consultation, grievances, and site-specific clinical challenges.
  • Lead monthly site psychiatry meetings to review clinical performance, system priorities, and organizational updates. 

Strategic & Operational Partnership 

  • Support and advance Compass Health Center’s Key Initiatives, including Access to Care, Optimal Outcomes, Continuity and Excellence, and Patient and Family Engagement.
  • Collaborate with site leadership to execute key initiative projects, develop action plans, and troubleshoot operational and clinical barriers.
  • Partner with the Vice President and CPG Administration to implement and monitor performance expectations, including RVU targets, encounter goals, quality assurance metrics, documentation standards, and budget goals.
  • Prepare, present, and report site-level psychiatric performance and progress during Monthly Site Review (MSR) meetings with executive leadership.
  • Lead flexible provider coverage efforts at the site and collaborate with the Regional Medical Director, Vice President, and administrative partners to support coverage needs across the Compass Psychiatry Group (CPG).
  • Collaborate with Compass leadership in developing the responsible incorporation of AI services into clinical care  

External & System Engagement 

  • Serve as a liaison with local and state agencies, including DCFS, Departments of Aging and Public Health, law enforcement, and other regulatory bodies as appropriate.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with local hospital systems, laboratories, and Risk Management partners.
  • Represent Compass Health Center in the community through outreach activities such as continuing education webinars, professional blogs, referral development, and collaboration with outpatient providers. 

Clinical Responsibilities 

In addition to leadership duties, the Site Medical Director provides direct patient care, including: 

  • Conducting comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, establishing diagnoses, and prescribing medications.
  • Maintaining accurate, timely, and compliant psychiatric documentation for all patient encounters.
  • Participating in utilization review, quality assurance, and performance improvement activities.
  • Engaging in ongoing professional development and continuing medical education.
  • Supervise internal nursing staff engaged in APRN training to develop a pipeline of excellent, vetted candidates for future roles in CPG 

 

Who You Are

Education & Training 

  • MD or DO (Allopathic or Osteopathic degree).
  • Board Eligible or Board Certified in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry or Adult Psychiatry.
  • Completion of at least three years of graduate psychiatric training in an AMA-approved program.
  • Active, unrestricted Maryland medical license.  DC and VA license preferred.
  • Willingness and eligibility to apply for cross-licensure through the Interstate Medical License Compact  

Experience 

  • Minimum of four years post-residency or fellowship experience.
  • Prior medical leadership and/or executive experience strongly preferred, including but not limited to:
  • Chief Resident or Chief Fellow roles
  • Faculty appointment with teaching and/or research responsibilities
  • Elected leadership roles in professional or medical societies
  • Management or leadership roles within private practice or medical groups 

Skills & Competencies 

  • Demonstrated excellence in communication, leadership presence, and executive functioning.
  • Advanced expertise in psychopharmacology and the evaluation and treatment of mental illness.
  • Clinical experience and proficiency in psychotherapy modalities, including CBT, DBT, and ACT.
  • Active, unrestricted Maryland medical license.  DC and VA license preferred.
