The Shopping Writer is a strategic digital content producer who understands what motivates Apartment Therapy’s audience to shop — whether it’s finding the perfect comfortable sofa or discovering a high-impact storage solution. This role is responsible for producing and updating a high volume of editorially driven, shopping-focused content with the goal of driving affiliate revenue while maintaining Apartment Therapy’s trusted voice.

 

The ideal candidate is not only passionate about home and lifestyle shopping but also skilled in using data and performance insights to inform and refine their work. They should have a strong foundation in editorial best practices, including fact-checking, sourcing, and brand voice consistency, to ensure that all shopping content is both engaging and accurate.

Accountabilities:

  • Research, write, and update compelling, SEO-optimized shopping content, including product roundups, gift guides, and in-depth reviews.
  • Drive affiliate revenue, helping Apartment Therapy meet its goals, with the support and editorial direction of AT’s Executive Editor and Shopping Director in conjunction with guidance from the Executive Home Director and Lifestyle Director.
  • Adhere to editorial guidelines for clarity, accuracy, and sourcing, ensuring all recommendations align with Apartment Therapy’s brand standards and audience expectations.
  • Help grow Apartment Therapy’s affiliate revenue by serving the audience compelling products across verticals that motivate them to shop
  • Pitch and write 6-10 stories per week, often with quick turnarounds, with a clear shopping intent
  • Visit furniture stores, showrooms, and attend relevant events as needed to offer boots-on-the-ground insights into furniture, decor, cleaning products, and more
  • Coordinate and execute process for writing up best-in-category home products
  • Review products across home and style verticals, adhering to high editorial standards.
  • Collaborate with editors and Apartment Therapy’s3 Shopping Director to track content performance and optimize affiliate-driven strategies and analyze performance metrics (traffic and revenue) to help refine content strategy and identify high-performing topics.
  • Strategically select products that balance editorial integrity and affiliate goals, recommending items that are high-quality, well-reviewed, and relevant to readers. 
  • Ensure product claims are fact-checked, prices and links are accurate, and all shopping content remains up to date.
  • Leverage affiliate revenue and traffic data to inform and adjust story pitches
  • Stay ahead of shopping trends and industry shifts, pitching timely coverage angles that align with Apartment Therapy’s voice and audience interests.
  • Execute potential “flat fee” placements as well as sales and deals coverage, depending on editorial needs
  • Contribute to social platforms to strategically feature products, as needed

Experience/Skills:

  • 1-2 years of writing editorial, commerce, and/or sponsored content, ideally within the home and lifestyle space
  • Consistent track record of filing clean, engaging copy on deadline
  • Ability to write engaging, well-structured, and data-informed shopping content.
  • Strong research skills and an understanding of editorial standards for sourcing and fact-checking.
  • A pro at packaging content for a digital audience that inspires people to take action
  • Experience using analytics tools such as Parse.ly, Trackonomics, and Amazon Associates to inform pitches that drive revenue and traffic
  • Experience covering major sales tentpoles, such as Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Prime Day, and more 
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, with the ability to juggle multiple assignments.
  • A willingness and eagerness to work collaboratively across teams to align with business and editorial goals.
  • A passion for home and shopping.

Compensation:

$60,000 - $65,000.

The above represents the expected salary range for this role. Ultimately, compensation is determined by level of experience and other job-related factors.
