Relay

Senior Technical Writer

CAD $135,000 – CAD $165,000 per year

TLDR

Shape in-product experiences and drive customer understanding through strategic writing and collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Relay is a digital banking platform that gives self-made business owners the tools and know-how to be great with money—bringing clarity, confidence, and control to every dollar earned, so they can turn hard work into lasting success. We do this by replacing financial guesswork with real visibility, transforming cash flow from a constant source of stress into a clear signal owners can use to run stronger, more resilient businesses.

We’re looking for a Senior Technical Writer to join our fast-growing Product Marketing team. In this role, you’ll sit at the intersection of marketing, product, and product design—owning the in-product voice and ensuring the customer experience is clear, consistent, and aligned with our messaging and positioning. Your work will directly influence how customers understand, adopt, and get value from Relay’s products.

This is an ideal role for a technical writer who is strategic, customer-obsessed, and motivated by impact. You’ll partner closely with Product Design to shape in-product experiences, with Product Marketing to translate value propositions into clear user-facing language, and with customers directly to ensure our product speaks in their voice. Your goal is to remove friction, accelerate onboarding, and drive product usage through exceptional in-product communication.

To start, you’ll audit and refine copy across our product lines—building a consistent, scalable voice and system for how Relay communicates in-product. Over time, you’ll establish standards, frameworks, and processes that improve clarity, drive adoption, and support multi-product growth.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • In-Product Writing & UX Content Ownership: Own and evolve the voice and tone across the Relay product. Write, edit, and refine UI copy—including onboarding flows, tooltips, error states, and feature education—to improve clarity and usability

  • Customer Understanding & Voice of Customer: Conduct customer interviews and partner with Product Marketing to deeply understand user needs, language, and mental models. Translate insights into clear, intuitive product experiences

  • Adoption & Onboarding Optimization: Identify friction points in the user journey and improve onboarding, activation, and feature discovery through clearer, more effective in-product communication

  • Product & Design Partnership: Collaborate closely with Product Management and Product Design to shape product experiences early—ensuring language supports user understanding, decision-making, and confidence

  • Content Systems & Standards: Build and maintain writing guidelines, patterns, and frameworks that drive consistency and scale as the product grows

  • Go-to-Market Alignment: Partner with Product Marketing to align in-product messaging with external positioning, campaigns, and launches—creating a seamless end-to-end customer experience

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work across Product, Design, Marketing, Growth, and Data to ensure product communication supports key business goals and customer outcomes

Who You Are

  • You have 5+ years of experience in technical writing, UX writing, or content design, preferably in a B2B or fintech environment

  • You have a strong portfolio of in-product writing that demonstrates clarity, simplicity, and impact on the user experience

  • You think strategically about language—not just what to say, but how it drives behavior, adoption, and understanding

  • You’re a customer champion—you engage deeply with customers and translate insights into messaging and positioning that resonates

  • You are highly collaborative and influence product and design decisions through clear reasoning and strong communication

  • You take pride in being a trusted voice of the customer when they’re not in the room

  • You have exceptional project management skills and can lead and influence cross-functional stakeholders to act with urgency and meet objectives and deadlines

  • You’re metrics-driven—you define KPIs, establish reporting requirements, and partner with the Data team to track progress through high-quality reporting

  • You excel in fast-paced environments, have a bias for action, and demonstrate a strong ownership mindset

The Interview Process

  • Stage 1: A 30-minute Google Meet video call with a member of the Talent team

  • Stage 2: A 60-minute Google Meet video call with the Director, Product Marketing

  • Stage 3: A 45-minute in-person interview with a member of the Leadership team

  • Stage 4: A take-home case study followed by a 60-minute Google Meet video call with our team

Our Compensation Approach

We believe Relayers should feel rewarded for the impact they have on our mission and growth. Compensation follows impact. As impact increases, compensation grows, and we do not limit compensation changes to a once-a-year review cycle.

The annual salary range for this role is $135,000 CAD to $165,000 CAD.

For candidates who demonstrate full readiness for the defined scope of the role, the typical starting salary is $150,000 CAD. Offers below this point reflect candidates we believe can grow into the full scope of the role with support and development. Offers above this point reflect impact that meaningfully exceeds the role’s defined expectations or an expanded scope from day one.

We encourage you to have a conversation with your recruiter and ask questions about compensation throughout the hiring process. For more information on our compensation philosophy and perks and benefits, visit our Candidate Hub.

Why Relay Might Be the Perfect Fit For You

  • You push relentlessly for reinvention: You’re built to constantly ask, “How can this be better?” Change excites you and you drive it.

  • You crave autonomy: We trust our team with big challenges and the freedom to solve them. If you’re someone who takes initiative, is comfortable taking risks, and seeks input when needed, you’ll find the freedom here empowering.

  • You own your work: You take pride in your work, follow through on commitments, and feel a deep sense of responsibility for outcomes, not just tasks.

  • You treat comfort as a red flag: You seek growth. When things feel too comfortable, you lean into change. You’re excited about  stepping into the unknown and navigating new terrain to create something better alongside your team.

  • You care about impact, not noise: You care deeply about the substance of your work. You measure success by results, not recognition and you let your work speak for itself.

  • You’re energized by complexity and ambiguity: You enjoy tackling problems that don’t come with a playbook. You’re comfortable building from scratch, iterating as you go, and collaborating to shape the best path forward.

  • You seek out feedback: We value directness, clarity, and respect. We believe honesty fuels great work and career growth. You see feedback as a tool for learning and improvement, and you know that open, honest dialogue is key to achieving the best results — together.

  • You’re here for more than a job: At Relay, everything we do is in service of our mission to help small businesses thrive. To drive impact and have purpose here, that mission must matter to you too.
