Research Innovations, Inc. (RII) is breaking through the big, slow, status quo with transformative technology that fundamentally changes and improves the world. We develop cutting-edge software for all levels of the government and military. Using agile development practices and user-centered design, we create innovative software solutions for complex real-world problems.
In this role, you will develop innovative concepts and solutions that drive the design of software systems aligned with customer and operational needs. You will collect, analyze, and synthesize mission, user, and system requirements from diverse stakeholders to shape a unified product strategy rooted in user-centered design and systems engineering best practices. Your work will include decomposing external data inputs into operational capabilities, modeling key concepts, and leading user engagement sessions to clarify, prioritize, and validate requirements. You will translate these insights into clear user stories, system specifications, and architecture documentation, while collaborating with UI/UX teams and product owners on wireframes and prototypes. As a core contributor to continuous improvement efforts, you will help refine systems engineering, user experience, and agile development processes across the program. You will also guide cross-functional teams in applying systems engineering practices, partner closely with software engineers to ensure requirements are properly implemented, and communicate system design and progress to customers through briefings, demos, and formal presentations.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
Develop innovative concepts and solutions to design software systems that meet customer and operational user needs.
Collect, analyze, and synthesize mission, user, and system requirements across multiple stakeholders to create a unified product strategy grounded in user-centered design and systems engineering best practices.
Decompose external data inputs into operational capabilities and create data models representing key operational concepts.
Lead user engagement sessions to design, clarify, prioritize, and validate product requirements across varying levels of fidelity.
Generate clear, concise user stories with traceable acceptance criteria aligned to the product roadmap.
Develop system specifications, architecture documentation, and design artifacts that effectively communicate the system approach.
Collaborate closely with UI/UX teams and product owners on low- to high-fidelity wireframes and prototypes.
Continuously improve systems engineering, user experience, and agile development processes across the program.
Communicate and implement systems engineering practices across multidisciplinary project teams.
Partner with software engineering teams to ensure functional and non-functional requirements are well-understood and met through the development lifecycle.
Communicate system design, requirements, and progress to customers through briefings, demos, and formal presentations.
WHAT YOU HAVE DONE
6+ years of experience in Systems Engineering, preferably within software-intensive environments.
Performed requirements analysis for complex, multi-stakeholder systems.
Decomposed operational needs into high-level system requirements, and further into implementable low-level specifications.
Worked collaboratively with mission, business, and technical stakeholders to solve ambiguous or ill-defined problems.
Engaged directly with end-users to elicit both specified and derived requirements using excellent communication and facilitation skills.
Communicated complex operational/system concepts using models, diagrams, and visual aids that are easily understood by engineering teams.
Delivered systems engineering contributions on DoD/IC programs.
Integrated user-centered design principles into rapid, agile software development workflows.
Applied systems engineering best practices to software-intensive systems.
Demonstrated exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work independently, self-direct, and deliver results.
EVEN BETTER
Knowledge of U.S. Army Electronic Warfare (EW) systems.
Experience developing and maintaining systems engineering processes at the project or organizational level.
Prior leadership of systems engineering teams supporting complex, software-intensive military systems.
Experience with military mission command systems.
Expertise documenting interoperability in a complex military system-of-systems environment.
Experience with Atlassian tools (Confluence, Jira).
Experience using MagicDraw or Cameo for system modeling.
Familiarity with UML or similar modeling languages.
Background working within agile software development life cycles.
