Senior Systems Engineer, In-Space

Berthoud , United States

AI overview

Take ownership of systems engineering for spacecraft propulsion, managing requirements and compliance while mentoring junior engineers within a fast-paced, innovative team.

The future of aerospace and defense starts here.

Ursa Major was founded to revolutionize how America and its allies access and apply high-performance propulsion, from hypersonics to solid rocket motors, satellite maneuvering and launch. We design and deliver propulsion and defense systems that solve the most urgent and critical national security demands.

Ursa Major’s teams move fast and do a lot with little. We are looking for a skilled, fast-learning individual who will serve as a central member of the team and take immediate ownership of systems engineering for spacecraft propulsion.  This role will be part of the technical organization, responsible for requirements development, verification, and validation for a variety of propulsion hardware, as well as system architecture and failure mode analysis. Candidates will be expected to have ownership from the initial concept phase to a production-ready design.

Responsibilities:

  • Support responsible engineers of all In-Space components and systems in defining, verifying, and maintaining requirements – it’ll be your responsibility to make sure we have the right set of requirements and that we’re on track to meet them with confidence through product development and qualification
  • Create and manage system engineering tools and processes
  • Review test and analysis reports to assist with confirmation that requirements are met
  • Communicate with management on requirement compliance at program reviews
  • Support reliability, failure modes, and risk assessments for major programs
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to Systems Engineering associates to advance their proficiency
  • Work along side system designers to ensure compliance to range safety requirements in SSCMAN 91-710

Required Qualifications:

  •  5+ years of experience in aerospace system design, project management or related system-level roles
  • B.S. in Aerospace, Systems or Mechanical Engineering (or other related technical subject area)
  • Experience applying aerospace systems engineering processes – design reviews, requirements verification and validation, failure and risk assessments
  • Demonstrated organization skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity in all its forms as well as contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment
  • Ability to earn trust and maintain positive and professional relationships

Desired Experience:

  • Experience with multiple systems engineering organizations and multiple product lifecycles – seen what works vs. what could be improved
  • Fluid system analysis, component selection, and supplier management experience
  • Spacecraft chemical propulsion system design, development or test
  • Familiarity with industry standard requirements documents such as MIL-STD-1522, RTCA/DO-178, MIL-STD-810, SSCMAN 91-710, AIAA-S080, SMC-S-016, etc...
  • Familiarity with requirements management tools such as DOORS or JAMA
