What You'll Do

Epic Games’ Fortnite team is looking for a versatile Senior Systems Designer for Matchmaking systems in our first party experiences, including Battle Royale, Reload and other ecosystem modes. In this role, you will cultivate the player experience, and create features that excite and delight. This role particularly emphasizes working with leaders outside of the development organization, such as Product Management and Data Science.

In this role, you will

  • Design and implement cross-platform matchmaking experiences that are native to each platform, emphasizing player journey value and fairness
  • Develop and validate ranking and skill experiences, including creating formulas, mathematical estimations, and prototypes with partner teams
  • Deliver and update world-class multiplayer experiences with a community-first approach, ensuring player connection and safety through features like voice chat, parties, and multiplayer lobbies
  • Collaborate with UX/UI, programming, design, production, community, user research, analytics, business, marketing, and insights teams to design, validate, and iterate on online multiplayer systems
  • Articulate, document, and present key pillars and philosophies of competitive multiplayer game system design trends, recommending ways to evolve Fortnite systems while leveraging the franchise's best elements; Set clear design goals and deliverables, focusing on achieving a high-quality, cohesive experience for all players across all platforms
  • Foster and maintain collaborative relationships across all development disciplines to ensure a world-class production process that avoids silos and reinforces a unified product vision
  • Partner with cross-disciplinary performance, user research, community, support, insights, and marketing teams to deliver high-quality game systems that drive long-term player excitement and engagement.

What we're looking for

  • 5+ years of experience designing game systems with an emphasis on matchmaking or progression
  • 2+ years of experience shipping updates and new features to players on a regular cadence or similar experiences that have transferable years of experience
  • Highly analytical - eager and comfortable monitoring data streams and working daily with Data Scientists, Analysts, and Product Managers to align on product goals
  • Strong stakeholder management across teams (Progression, Marketing, Product Management, Gameplay Design, Competitive Operations, and Art & Cosmetics)
  • Deep experience in Competitive PvP Games required; exposure to Mobile, F2P, Live Service, or broader Progression Systems is welcome
  • Have experience around multiplayer matchmaking including telemetry collection / usage, maintaining and balancing/planning large and interconnected systems and player experiences on a cross platform PC and console online title
  • Demonstrated talent for empathizing with players and a deep understanding of player motivations, forms of play, and the effects of goal setting on play
  • Interest in ranked and competitive play in Fortnite or other multiplayer games, with an understanding of what makes them effective

This role is open to multiple locations in North America (including CA & WA).

The expected annual base pay range(s) for this position are detailed below. Each base pay range is relevant only for individuals who are residents of or will be expected to work within the specified locale. Compensation varies based on a variety of factors, which include (but aren’t limited to) things such as skills and competencies, qualifications, knowledge, and experience. In addition to base pay, most employees are eligible to participate in Epic’s generous benefit plans and discretionary incentive programs (subject to the terms of those plans or programs).
