We’re looking for a Senior Story Desk Editor, Central News Desk to help lead a team of digital producers based in various markets to cover breaking news across the country, during an assigned daypart.

The TEGNA central desk team is responsible for national breaking stories, as well as coverage of stories in markets that don’t have a TEGNA station.

The role includes partnering with local TEGNA newsrooms to provide critical support during major breaking news situations, ensuring our communities receive the timely, accurate coverage they need when it matters most. This team will also identify and develop trending stories that resonate across all TEGNA markets.

Responsibilities: What You’ll Do

  • Help manage a team of digital producers responsible for national breaking and trending stories during an assigned daypart 
  • Determine editorial priorities by assessing which stories should be produced first based on news value, audience impact, and deadlines.
  • Be actively involved in daily news production — contributing to the creation and distribution of breaking news content across digital platforms.
  • Help plan coverage for anticipated major news events for the coming days and week to ensure timely, comprehensive reporting.
  • Use social listening and SEO trends to discover unique stories Coordinate with local newsrooms to provide digital support in major breaking news situations
  • Use data and audience insights to inform content decisions
  • Collaborate with the Growth Team to package stories in compelling, multi-platform formats Mentor digital producers on writing, sourcing and ethical storytelling

Requirements: What We’re Looking For

  • 5+ years in a newsroom, with at least 2 years in a content or editorial leadership role
  • Track record of developing and growing digital audiences
  • Deep understanding of editorial strategy and story planning
  • Experience working across platforms
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and make quick editorial decisions during fast-moving breaking news situations
  • Experience coordinating coverage across multiple markets and managing remote teams
  • Collaborative leader with the ability to inspire and coach and grow digital producers
  • Strong news judgment and ability to prioritize what’s urgent, impactful and relevant
  • Understanding of current digital content strategies, SEO best practices and multi-platform distribution
  • Basic video editing experience for multiple platforms

Pay Range
$75,000$100,000 USD
