Senior/Staff Software Engineer - Distributed Systems

AI overview

Contribute to the development of autonomous driving technology by designing large distributed mapping systems and optimizing complex data processing pipelines.
Our Calibration, Localization, and Mapping (CLAMS) team is responsible for building the algorithms and tools necessary for keeping Zoox vehicles well calibrated, always knowing where they’re located within the world, and aware of their environment. Without precise calibration, localization, and mapping, our vehicles would be at a disadvantage when it comes to perceiving and reasoning about the surrounding world, and this is therefore foundational in enabling results from many other teams across Zoox. This work is critical for scaling autonomous driving in a safe and reliable way. We are looking for engineers who are ambitious and excited about helping Zoox deliver on its goals to deliver autonomous mobility. In this role, you will:
  • Design and develop large distributed mapping systems that process sensor data across hundreds of compute nodes
  • Architect scalable data pipelines and orchestration frameworks to improve system throughput and reliability
  • Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks in distributed workloads, optimizing for latency and resource utilization
  • Lead technical design reviews and mentor engineers on best practices for distributed systems
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define system requirements and technical roadmaps
  • Contribute to all phases of the software development cycle including prototyping, requirements capture, design, implementation, and validation
  • Qualifications
  • Bachelors or higher in Computer Science or related field
  • 6+ years of industry experience working on distributed systems
  • Fluency in C++ and Python
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Experience with AWS services (S3, EC2, Lambda, SQS, DynamoDB)
  • Bonus Qualifications
  • Experience with geographic data and 3D meshes
  • Experience with relational databases
  • Background in robotics, autonomous systems, or geospatial data processing
  • Experience with software profiling and performance tuning
