Senior Software Engineer (PHP/Symfony/Go)

As a Senior Engineer at Temper, you’ll play a key role in shaping our next-generation Symfony platform—the backbone for our iOS, Android, and web apps. You’ll drive architectural decisions, lead complex backend initiatives, guide our migration from legacy Laravel services, and improve reliability and performance across systems used by hundreds of thousands of workers and clients each month, all while enjoying the freedom, ownership, and learning culture that define Temper.

Your future team

You’ll join the Product & Technology (P&T) team at Temper, which is comprised of three customer-facing squads (one of which you’ll be joining) and an SRE squad. Each squad has a Tech Lead, a designer and a Product Manager and you’ll report to an Engineering Manager (of which we have four). You’ll be working together with your team members on new initiatives from the Discovery sessions onwards, meaning you’ll be making a difference in everything we create together.

What You’ll Do

• Backend Development: Collaborate to design and evolve the core backend services, defining architecture and contributing to domain modelling, performance optimisation, and code quality.

• Data & Search: Design scalable schemas in PostgreSQL and implement Redis-backed caching strategies to support high-volume traffic.

• Cloud & Containers: Define and improve Kubernetes deployments, Helm charts, and resilient CI/CD pipelines powering our multi-environment production architecture.

• Observability & Reliability: Collaborate with SREs to expose key metrics and traces, and use Prometheus and Grafana to monitor and improve application performance.

• Messaging Systems: Design and extend event-driven workflows using Pub/Sub to decouple systems and improve throughput.

• Quality & Mentorship: Champion clean, maintainable and performant code and help your teammates do the same—through thoughtful PR reviews, coaching, and a pragmatic approach to balancing quality with delivery speed.

• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Product, UX, and Data teams to transform ambiguous problems into elegant and pragmatic engineering  solutions.

Requirements

Must-Have Skills & Experience

• 5+ years professional backend engineering experience, including significant time in modern PHP (7.4/8+) and large-scale Symfony apps..

• Expertise in modern backend frameworks, like Symfony and its ecosystem (Messenger, Doctrine, configuration, caching).

• Proven experience with SQL and RDBMS (PostgreSQL/MySQL)

• Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, containerization, and Helm.

• Good understanding of event-driven architecture and related tooling, such as message streams and message brokers.

• Hands-on experience building actionable observability—dashboards, alerts, SLOs using Prometheus, Grafana, or similar.

• Fluent in English, with strong communication skills.

• You have a proven track record of transparent communication and accountability.

Nice-to-Haves

• Experience designing large-scale APIs.

• Familiarity with frontend frameworks and mobile development.

• Experience with Elasticsearch.

• Background in high-throughput, low-latency systems.

• Exposure to ELK monitoring stacks.
