The Role
We are seeking a Senior Backend Software Engineer to join our Measurement & Ads team. This team is responsible for building and operating the core backend systems that support measurement, attribution, experimentation, and integrations across all of SoFi’s marketing channels.
In this role, you will tackle complex, data-intensive problems at scale, design reliable event pipelines, attribution systems, and APIs that connect ad platforms, internal analytics, and downstream consumers. You’ll operate with a high degree of autonomy, owning meaningful backend components from design through production, while collaborating closely with Product, Marketing, Data, and other Engineering teams.
The ideal candidate is a strong systems thinker, pragmatic builder, and collaborative partner who cares deeply about correctness, reliability, and operational excellence.
What you’ll do
- Design, build, and operate scalable backend services that power measurement, attribution, and ads enablement across SoFi’s paid channels.
- Own complex, data-driven systems end-to-end, from architecture and implementation through deployment, monitoring, and long-term maintenance, particularly over high-volume event ingestion, identity mapping, and attribution data flows.
- Build and evolve event ingestion pipelines, APIs, and data flows that integrate with external ad platforms, internal analytics, and experimentation frameworks, enabling near-real-time measurement and data activation use cases.
- Contribute to the technical architecture and roadmap, help identify “big-rock” problems and propose durable, scalable solutions.
- Ensure systems are highly available, observable, and correct, with strong guarantees around data quality and consistency, pipeline health, and attribution accuracy..
- Collaborate effectively to translate ads and measurement requirements into robust technical solutions.
- Lead code and design reviews, set a high bar for backend quality and reliability, lead incident investigations, and drive improvements that reduce operational risk over time.
- Mentor other engineers through technical guidance, thoughtful reviews, and shared ownership of outcomes.
What you’ll need
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of professional backend software engineering experience on a modern stack, delivering production-grade systems at scale.
- Strong experience designing and building distributed systems, including APIs, async workflows, and data pipelines.
- Hands-on experience with event ingestion, processing and queuing systems (e.g., Kafka, SQS).
- Proficiency with backend languages such as Kotlin/Java, Python, or similar, and experience working within service-oriented or microservice architectures.
- Solid understanding of relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL/MySQL), data modeling, and access patterns.
- Experience building and operating systems in cloud environments (AWS preferred), including containerized workloads (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Strong sense of ownership and independence in driving projects from ideation to production impact.
- A pragmatic engineering mindset with balance over correctness, scalability, and speed to deliver meaningful business outcomes.
- Clear, effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate across multiple disciplines.
- Strong focus on observability and operational excellence (metrics, alerting, SLO/SLA, runbooks).
Nice to have
- Experience with marketing measurement, ad technology and platforms (i.e. MMP, MTA, Meta CAPI, Google Ads)
- Familiarity with customer data platform, experimentation, or data warehouse ecosystems (i.e. Amplitude, Optimizely, mParticle)
- Experience building or integrating with third-party APIs at scale.
- Experience working in financial services, fintech, or regulated environments.
