Senior Software Engineer, Cloud Growth

AI overview

Lead the design and build of business-critical systems impacting customer acquisition and revenue operations while collaborating cross-functionally for architectural excellence.

About Us

Temporal is an open source programming model that can simplify code, make applications more reliable, and help developers focus on the important things like delivering features faster. We are on a mission to be the reliable foundation of every developer’s toolbox, and are building the team that will make that happen.

Our values guide us —they are present in how we show up, make decisions, and work together to make an impact. We’re curious, driven, collaborative, genuine and humble.

Temporal is growing and we are looking for those who share our values, challenge 'standard' thinking, and want to influence our future. If you have a passion for improving the developer experience, building world-class open-source software and communities, and want to be a part of our amazing team, we'd love to hear from you!

Summary

We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our high-impact team focused on product scalability, customer experience, and revenue growth. Our team owns business-critical services including customer onboarding and off-boarding, billing and metering, cloud marketplace integrations, and Cloud Nexus. Cloud Nexus is a foundational platform that connects Temporal Applications through a scalable, self-service ecosystem with a unified API abstraction layer.

In this role, you’ll lead technical direction and build systems that directly impact Temporal’s revenue engine and customer journey. You’ll partner closely with engineers, product managers, finance, revenue operations, support, and sales to design resilient architectures, drive cross-functional execution, and raise the reliability and scalability bar for our billing, metering, and customer lifecycle platforms. If you enjoy owning ambiguous, high-leverage problems and building durable systems that scale with the business, we’d love to meet you.

[This is not an internal deployment role]

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the Design of Business-Critical Systems: Own end-to-end technical design and delivery for services that power customer acquisition, onboarding/off-boarding, and revenue operations.
  • Drive Architectural Excellence: Define and evolve system architecture for high-throughput, fault-tolerant metering and billing pipelines; make principled tradeoffs across correctness, latency, cost, and operability.
  • Own Cross-Functional Execution: Partner with Finance, RevOps, and Sales to translate business needs into robust, scalable systems—anticipating edge cases, ensuring audit-ability, and aligning stakeholders on milestones and risks.
  • Contribute Deeply to Cloud Nexus: Design and scale primitives that enable multi-cloud connectivity across teams, domains, and regions; ensure strong isolation, clear abstractions, and predictable performance.
  • Ensure Data Integrity, Reliability, and Compliance: Build and operate distributed data systems with strong correctness guarantees; implement monitoring, alerting, dashboards, and runbooks that keep revenue-impacting pipelines trustworthy.
  • Raise the Engineering Bar: Set quality standards through code reviews, design reviews, and operational readiness; introduce patterns and tooling that improve maintainability and incident response.
  • Mentor and Multiply Impact: Mentor engineers, unblock execution, and foster a culture of ownership, learning, and pragmatic excellence.
  • Improve Developer and Customer Experience: Identify opportunities to streamline customer flows via automation, better tooling, and targeted platform improvements that reduce friction and support load.

What You Bring to Us

  • Significant experience designing and delivering production-grade backend systems (ideally in cloud environments) with meaningful ownership over architecture and operational outcomes.
  • Strong proficiency in at least one systems/backend language (Go preferred), with the ability to navigate large codebases and drive technical decisions.
  • Demonstrated experience building and operating distributed systems: concurrency, reliability, scaling, consistency, and failure handling.
  • Practical understanding of data pipelines and storage systems (e.g., Postgres, Redshift, Kafka/Kinesis, S3-like systems) and how to ensure correctness and traceability
  • Experience with production operations: observability, incident response, performance tuning, on-call readiness, and continuous delivery.
  • Ability to work effectively across functions (Finance/RevOps/Sales/Support), translating ambiguous requirements into clear, executable technical plans.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write design docs, align stakeholders, and explain tradeoffs.
  • A “builder” mindset: you enjoy simplifying complex workflows, improving tooling, and leaving systems better than you found them.

Tech Stack

  • Primary Language: Go
  • Data Storage: PostgreSQL, Redshift, S3, Google Cloud Storage, Azure Blob Storage
  • Data Processing: Kinesis, Firebase
  • Infrastructure: Kubernetes
  • Third-Party Services: Zapier, Stripe, Segment, Pylon, Metronome
  • Core Framework: Temporal (of course!)

What Is Good to Have

  • High-impact ownership over systems tied directly to revenue, customer lifecycle, and platform scalability
  • Collaborative engineering culture focused on quality, pragmatism, and measurable outcomes
  • Exceptional technical colleagues and a feedback-rich environment
  • Lean processes and autonomy without unnecessary bureaucracy
  • Strong emphasis on reliability and operational excellence—balanced with rapid iteration
  • A team that values mentorship, thoughtful design, and steady improvements that compound over time

Compensation

  • The estimated pay range for this role is $180,000 – $225,000, depending on experience and location.
  • This role is also eligible to participate in Temporal’s equity plan.
Compensation ranges reflect salary and commission compensation (when applicable) across several geographic markets.
