About this role
The Globalization team at Udemy is on a mission to make learning accessible to everyone, everywhere.
As a Senior Software Engineer on this team, you will play a pivotal role in architecting and building the systems that allow Udemy to scale globally. You will tackle complex technical challenges—from optimizing payment flows for specific regions to re-imagining content discovery for different cultures. You will serve as a technical anchor for the team, driving best practices, influencing architectural decisions, and ensuring our systems are robust, scalable, and ready for millions of global users.
What you'll be doing
Lead Technical Design: Drive the design and implementation of complex, high-scale features and services. You will take vague requirements and turn them into concrete, scalable technical architectures.
Build & Deploy: Contribute to the design, development, and deployment of backend and full-stack features using technologies like Kotlin, Spring Boot, Python, Django, React, Kafka, Redis, and MySQL.
Mentorship: Act as a mentor to junior and mid-level engineers, providing technical guidance, conducting thorough code reviews, and fostering a culture of engineering excellence.
Drive Quality: Champion best practices in testing, observability, and documentation. You will ensure our services are production-ready and easy to maintain.
Collaborate: Partner deeply with Product Managers and Designers to shape the product roadmap. You will provide technical feasibility assessments and propose innovative solutions to business problems.
Solve Hard Problems: Troubleshoot complex production issues, identify bottlenecks in our distributed systems, and implement long-term fixes.
What you'll have
Education: B.S. degree or higher in Computer Science or a related technical field.
Experience: 5+ years of experience in software engineering, with a strong track record of delivering complex applications in a distributed environment.
Language Proficiency: Proficiency in at least one object-oriented language (e.g., Java, Kotlin, Python).
Web & API Development: Experience working on web applications or APIs, with a strong understanding of HTTP, REST, and modern backend patterns.
Infrastructure & Data: Exposure to databases (SQL or NoSQL), caching systems (e.g., Redis), and cloud environments (e.g., AWS).
System Design: Strong understanding of distributed system architecture, design patterns, data modeling, and scalability principles and experience with event-driven architectures using Kafka.
Frontend experience with modern frontend frameworks like React.js and Next.js, along with an understanding of SSR and frontend performance.
Communication: Excellent communication skills in English, with the ability to drive technical consensus and explain complex concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Nice to have
Experience with Spring Boot and GraphQL.
Experience with gRPC/Protobuf.
Background in Internationalization (i18n) or building global-ready products.
Exposure to microservice architecture and containerization tools like Docker or Kubernetes.
