Role Summary
As a member of the Sophos Core Platform development team, the Software Engineer works closely with software engineers, architects, product management and others to design and build the foundational platform capabilities that allow Sophos product teams to deliver scalable services and quickly bring new features to market. As part of an agile scrum team you will design & develop highly scalable platform features, public APIs and services for the next generation Sophos products.
What you will do
- Design and implement Services and features that are instrumental in building the next generation Sophos Central platform.
- Participate in planning and design sessions with engineering management, architects and development team leads.
- Coordinate across geographically distributed teams to collaborate effectively for development discussions.
- Mentor and guide team members to ensure team goals.
- Service ownership to ensure stability and scalability.
What you will bring
- 4 to 6 years of total and over 4 years of relevant software development experience.
- Experience developing, deploying and debugging large cloud service applications, preferably AWS.
- Good understanding of distributed cloud architectures & patterns including availability, security, and telemetry.
- Solid understanding of cloud-based platforms and microservice architecture including but not limited to AWS, Azure Cloud. Knowledge of AWS services including EC2, IAM, SQS, SNS, S3, Cloudwatch.
- Understanding of OpenAPI specification.
- In-depth working knowledge of RDS or NoSQL databases.
- Strong working knowledge of Docker and the container ecosystem
- Experience using terraform to deploy infrastructure in support of your applications.
- Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills and demonstrated ability to investigate and solve complex problems, including solving critical production issues in complex systems and investigating and determining root causes.
- Technical acumen to lead the creation of both system-level and service-level designs in collaboration with other technical experts.
- Understanding of common standards / processes / tools and the ability to leverage them where possible.
- Excellent in verbal and written communication, and able to constructively discuss and convey differing ideas, approaches, and perspectives, particularly in written communications.
- Excellent operational knowledge of Linux operating systems
- Exceptionally strong written and verbal communications skills, as well as good interpersonal, organization, and teamwork skills.
- Eagerness to learn the world of Internet security and the Sophos product suite.
- Other beneficial experience includes:
- Strong knowledge in distributed NoSQL databases like MongoDB, DynamoDB
- Strong knowledge in distributed messaging services like Kafka, SQS
- Strong knowledge in distributed caching services like Redis, Memcached
- Strong knowledge in at least one scripting language, preferably Python
- Experience with CI/CD tools and methodologies, specifically Jenkins
- Front end development; preferably Angular
- Kubernetes and container orchestration experience
