Senior Shopify Engineer

Position Overview 

We are seeking a highly experienced technical leader to architect, design, and develop advanced Shopify-based web applications. This senior role is central to our commitment to an accessibility-first user experience, requiring deep expertise in implementing non-overlay ADA/WCAG compliant solutions directly at the code level. The position extends beyond standard theme customization to encompass complex application integrations using Shopify APIs, particularly GraphQL, comprehensive performance optimization, and robust architecture design. As a key member of the Development Team, you will define technical direction, elevate coding standards, mentor engineers, and play a crucial role in our ongoing compliance efforts for ADA, GDPR, and CCPA. Your responsibilities will include:

• Architect, design, and develop comprehensive Shopify-based web applications and storefronts, defining both frontend and backend solutions and their integration points.
• Lead the development and customization of Shopify themes using Liquid, and build custom applications by integrating with Shopify APIs (Admin, Storefront), GraphQL, and REST endpoints.
• Implement complex features within Shopify Plus and multi-store environments, including custom checkout flows, advanced promotions, and membership logic. 
• Champion and implement accessibility-first development practices, ensuring all solutions are built from the code level to comply with non-overlay ADA/WCAG standards and contribute to ongoing GDPR and CCPA compliance efforts.
• Drive performance optimization initiatives by refactoring existing systems, implementing advanced caching strategies, and optimizing code and assets to improve loading times.
• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers by leading code reviews, establishing development best practices, and elevating the team's overall code quality standards.
• Ensure the delivery of high-quality, robust code by actively participating in and adhering to the team's quality assurance processes.
• Develop and maintain internal and third-party web applications using React that integrate seamlessly with the Shopify platform.
• Collaborate effectively with DevOps in an established CI CD setup, with enough understanding to work within automated deployment processes.
• Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, API specifications, and operational guides.

Required Skills & Experience:

• A minimum of 10 years in professional software and web development, with at least 5 years of intensive experience focused on the Shopify platform.
• Strong Shopify Plus e-commerce domain experience is a must; this person will partner with business stakeholders and own solutioning for integrations and platform enhancements.
• Proven expertise with Shopify APIs (Admin and Storefront), with mandatory proficiency in GraphQL and extensive experience with REST for custom integrations.
• Deep, practical knowledge of web accessibility, with demonstrated experience implementing non-overlay ADA and WCAG-compliant solutions at the code level.
• Advanced proficiency in modern frontend development, with a strong emphasis on React for building web applications that integrate with the Shopify ecosystem.
• Strong capability in software architecture design, performance optimization (e.g., loading time improvements, caching strategies, code splitting), and analytical problem-solving.
• A strong commitment to quality assurance practices as an integral part of the development lifecycle.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to mentor and work effectively across teams.

Nice to have skills

• Familiarity with database technologies, including SQL (e.g., PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL, Oracle SQL) or NoSQL (e.g., MongoDB) systems.
• SAP integration experience, SAP SDK was mentioned as a big plus 
• Proven experience in optimizing high-traffic e-commerce sites, including A/B testing, conversion rate optimization, and advanced SEO strategies.
• Familiarity with data privacy regulations, such as GDPR and CCPA, and their implementation in an e-commerce context.
