About the position

As a Senior River Engineer at The Ocean Cleanup, you will be a key contributor to the design, implementation, and deployment of river cleanup systems. You will work on technical solutions for intercepting plastic in rivers, overseeing the entire engineering process—from initial design and verification through to installation, testing, and commissioning. Your expertise will help ensure the success of our field deployments and play a vital role in advancing the development of future technologies.

In this hands-on role, you will scout potential deployment sites, lead technical design efforts, and review the work of your colleagues and suppliers. You’ll also drive continuous improvement in engineering processes and quality standards, while providing senior-level mentorship to junior engineers. As part of a dynamic, innovative team, you’ll help push the boundaries of what’s possible and contribute directly to our mission to clean up more rivers and oceans across the globe.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Marine/Civil Engineering or a related field with experience in marine/civil-water domains.
  • 10+ years of hands-on experience in design, verification, and installation of technical solutions.
  • Expertise in systems architecture, design, testing, and commissioning, specifically for water-related systems.
  • Proven ability to manage engineering projects from concept through to implementation.
  • Experience in leading cross-functional teams, mentoring junior engineers, and driving engineering excellence.
  • Fluent in English and capable of traveling to project sites in the Americas and Asia.
  • A hands-on, pragmatic approach to engineering challenges, with a focus on quality and efficiency.

Experience

  • Extensive experience in river/marine engineering, specifically in design, verification, and field deployment.
  • International project engineering experience is highly desirable.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills, with the ability to guide and inspire teams.
  • Familiarity with CAD software and fluid/structural simulation tools.
  • Ability to adapt and thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Fluency in additional languages (Dutch, Spanish, or Southeast Asian languages) is a plus.
