Senior RF / EMI Engineer

AI overview

Lead RF and EMI initiatives for advanced unmanned aerial vehicles, ensuring reliable avionics and communication systems through hands-on testing and validation processes.
At Skyways, we are building the future of air transportation with our fully autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Backed by significant funding, including a major $37M STRATFI contract from the U.S. Air Force, we are focused on commercial and defense markets. Our strategy blends rapid iteration with real-world deployment, and we are looking for a marketing leader who can help us establish distinct brand positioning and recognition ahead of our Series B fundraise. The Opportunity Skyways is building fully autonomous aircraft that operate in complex, noisy electromagnetic environments. As our Senior RF (Radio Frequency) / EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) Engineer, you will ensure our avionics, communications, and power systems coexist cleanly across development, flight test, and real-world deployment. This is a hands-on role with direct impact on aircraft reliability and mission success. You will support in-house RF and EMI testing and formalize EMI/EMC test procedures to ensure consistent, repeatable validation from early development through certification. What You'll Do:
  • Own RF, EMI, and EMC considerations across avionics, communications, payloads, and power systems.
  • Diagnose and resolve EMI issues during integration, ground test, and flight test.
  • Define and implement EMI mitigation strategies including grounding, shielding, filtering, cable routing, and enclosure design.
  • Partner closely with electrical and systems engineers to influence system architecture early.
  • Define and optimize RF hardware placement within the aircraft.
  • Own RF and EMI validation end to end, from in-house development testing through pre-compliance and formal EMI/EMC certification.
  • Work directly with flight hardware in the lab and on the aircraft.
  • What You'll Bring:
  • 5+ years of experience working on RF, EMI, or EMC for complex hardware systems.
  • Background in aviation or satellitesStrong understanding of EMI/ EMC fundamentals and coupling mechanisms.
  • Experience with RF systems such as radios, antennas, GPS, or data links.
  • Hands-on debugging experience using spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, and related lab equipment.
  • Experience supporting system integration and cross-disciplinary debugging.
  • Ability to translate theory into practical, flight-ready solutions.
  • Bonus Points:
  • Experience with airborne or safety-critical systems.
  • Familiarity with standards such as MIL-STD-461 or DO-160.
  • Experience reviewing or influencing PCB layout for EMI robustness.
  • Flight test or forward-deployed testing experience.
  • Background spanning both RF design and system-level EMI troubleshooting.
