We are looking for a Senior Product Engineer. As a Senior Product Engineer, you’ll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.

The Senior Product Engineer will work to stand up critical product and business processes, tools, and systems in support of manufacturing of our products. As a Senior Product Engineer, you will be responsible for BOMs, routings, FMA / RMA / MRB / RCCA, change control, continuous improvement, and maintenance of manufacturing processes in a production environment.

This critical team member will work to establish, characterize, and improve our current and future processes through a disciplined engineering approach as we progress on our mission to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems. 


Responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for configuration and change management, BOMs, process flows, routings, and release to manufacturing.  
  • Create work instructions (SOP’s) including EH&S guidelines, LOTO procedures, technician training plans, and maintenance SOPs for area of responsibility.
  • Establish quality system processes such as NCM/MRB, in-process audits, RCCA/FA, and begin the journey toward ISO Certification.  
  • Initiate / support / implement lean manufacturing principles such as 5S, kaizen, continuous improvement, RCCA, MDI, statistical process controls, and establish/monitor key measurables.
  • Partner with key stakeholders to select, implement, and maintain a Manufacturing Execution System supporting routings, work instructions, defective materials, incoming inspection, label printing, and/or traceability.
  • Develop, implement, and track a yield management program for assembly and test.
  • Extract and analyze data from assembly and test engineering databases.
  • Review yield data aimed at identifying yield improvement opportunities.
  • Assemble, task and drive to conclusion cross functional yield improvement teams to address any specific or systemic issues.
  • Interact with Strategic Procurement to implement required material cost reductions to meet or exceed required material cost roadmap.
  • Work with Manufacturing Process Engineers to increase yield through vendor material quality improvement initiatives and internal process improvement activities.
  • Partner with the development team to select components and vendors that support yield requirements.
  • Provide feedback to R&D and Procurement on new product yield opportunities.
  • Work with Manufacturing, NPI Team and Development on New Product Introduction Activities
  • Set up BOMS and Routings for new products.
  • Establish processes and procedures in compliance with our QMS, consistent with in industry standards (i.e.ISO9001)
  • Perform manufacturing engineering and quality system functions to support early production.  
  • Drive root cause analysis and corrective action on production failures.
  • Meet business OKR’s and key results.
  • Other assigned duties as required in support of business needs.
  • Assist with the build and test of components for Quantum Computers.
  • Assist with EHS best practices.


You’d be a good fit with: 

  • 5+ years' experience in high-tech, engineering driven, manufacturing environments using complex electro-optical systems, sub systems and components.
  • Experience with complex optical systems, lasers, free-space optical systems, fiber optic and custom electronic assemblies.
  • The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, analytic, detail-oriented, possesses quantitative analysis skills, is self-motivated, a great team member, able to proactively communicate with employees at all levels, delivering excellence in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Experience as a manufacturing engineer with practice and knowledge within quality systems, especially within regulated industries such as medical or aerospace.  
  • Mechanical, electrical, and optical equipment troubleshooting experience.
  • Optical Alignment Processing experience, including experience in aligning lenses, mirrors, prisms, and optical/opto-mechanical components on an optical breadboard.
  • Experience in implementation, use and configuration of PLM/ERP/MRP/MES/Jira systems.
  • Experience transforming R&D prototypes into highly reliable products.
  • Collaboration with cross-functional development teams including engineering, research, and development.
  • Strong hands-on attitude and ability to spend significant time "on the floor" with the team, being involved at the detail level. 
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering or Science.
  • Experience working in a Cleanroom setting and ESD environment.
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Google Sheets and MS Office.

  • Broad knowledge of complex optical, electrical, or mechanical products and systems.
  • Additional experience desired with semiconductor, optics, photonics components, opto-electronic modules, vacuum assemblies, and cryogenic systems.
  • Experience/success in interacting directly with suppliers. Collaboration with supply chain sourcing, fostering partnerships for critical development and risk reduction. 
  • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work well with customers, suppliers, and in a team environment.
  • Ability to act independently to uncover and resolve issues with various production issues such as defective materials, process issues, training, etc.
  • Best-in-class cross-functional communication, collaboration & presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working in Opto/Mechanical production environment.  
  • Experience in a regulated industry, specifically with CAPA’s and Audits


Location:
This role will work onsite at our office located in Bothell, WA.
Travel: Less than 15%, some travel may be required to College Park or field deployment at times

The approximate base salary range for this position is $111,407 - $145,861. The total compensation package includes base, bonus, and equity.

Compensation will vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Posted base salary figures are subject to change as new market data becomes available. IonQ's HQ is located in College Park, Maryland, just outside of Washington DC. We are actively building out our recently opened manufacturing and production facility in Bothell, WA (near Seattle). Depending on the position, you may be required to be near one of our offices in College Park, Seattle, Toronto, Canada, and Basel, Switzerland.
