HappyCo is a company where people can grow their careers and work with like minded people, with no egos or politics. HappyCo is values driven and offers a flexible, supportive culture. Join HappyCo and Make Work Happy!
Sitting within HappyCo’s mobile product team, the Senior Product Designer focuses on the tools frontline property teams use every day to conduct inspections, complete preventive maintenance, resolve work orders, and capture high‑quality property data directly from the field. These experiences must work under pressure, in poor connectivity, and with little tolerance for friction.
You will own complex mobile workflows end to end — from discovery through delivery and beyond launch — working as part of a product triad alongside the team’s Product Manager and Engineering Lead. Together, you will help define the team’s roadmap, priorities, and trade-offs in alignment with company goals, product strategy, and long-term vision. Within this triad, you will be responsible for shaping how emerging technologies, particularly AI‑powered experiences, reduce effort, improve accuracy, and accelerate outcomes for frontline users and the businesses they support. The work requires high autonomy, speed, and a willingness to break down silos across product areas to deliver cohesive, scalable experiences.
The role suits a designer who demonstrates high‑impact judgment and broad ownership, operating independently regardless of title or formal level. It calls for comfort with experimentation, thoughtful use of AI to increase both user value and internal efficiency, and a day‑to‑day commitment to customer obsession.
With direct access to thousands of daily mobile users, success depends on turning customer exposure into visible, actionable insight and regularly sharing patterns and outcomes with teams across HappyCo to inform decisions beyond the mobile surface.
What You'll Do | Design Ownership & Impact
Own and evolve core mobile workflows used daily by maintenance and property teams in the field.
Co-author and articulate a clear mobile product experience vision in partnership with Product Management and Design Leadership, and act as a long-term champion for that vision as the product evolves.
Design for real-world constraints: offline usage, unreliable connectivity, performance limitations, device variability, and speed under pressure.
Identify and drive improvements across product boundaries, not just within a single product team or feature.
Translate complex operational problems into simple, resilient, mobile-first solutions.
What You'll Do | Customer Obsession
Develop a deep understanding of how maintenance technicians, asset managers, and property managers actually work, rather than how we assume they work.
Run timely, pragmatic research including interviews, usability testing, and lightweight validation loops.
Bring real customer context, such as quotes, workflows, edge cases, and observed behaviours, into everyday product discussions.
Balance customer needs with business goals, technical constraints, and operational realities.
Challenge solutions that are technically impressive or user-friendly in isolation but misaligned with business outcomes or strategic priorities.
What You'll Do | Design Execution & Speed
Design, prototype, test, and iterate quickly using high-fidelity mobile prototypes.
Leverage AI-driven tools to accelerate ideation, exploration, validation, synthesis, and delivery as part of your daily workflow.
Balance speed with judgment, delivering work that is high quality, scalable, and grounded in evidence.
Deliver meaningful customer-facing improvements within your first month.
What You'll Do | Product Signals & Insight
Own the design perspective on mobile product instrumentation, ensuring key workflows are measurable and observable.
Partner with Product and Engineering to define meaningful mobile UX metrics (e.g. task completion, time-on-task, drop-offs, retries, adoption).
Regularly monitor and analyze product usage data to identify patterns, friction points, and emerging behaviours.
Translate insights into clear hypotheses and concrete design actions.
Validate whether shipped changes improve outcomes and iterate based on evidence.
What You'll Do | Making Customer Insight Visible
Regularly synthesize and share customer insights from mobile usage data, research, and field feedback with the design team, product partners, and the wider organization.
Surface patterns and themes, not just isolated findings, to keep teams grounded in real customer needs.
Act as a strong, evidence-backed voice for the customer in cross-functional conversations.
Create lightweight, repeatable ways for teams to stay close to mobile customers, even when they are not directly involved in the work.
Use insights to influence priorities and follow-up actions.
What You'll Do | Collaboration, Craft & Culture
Partner closely with Product Managers and Mobile Engineers to define scope, navigate trade-offs, and deliver outcomes.
Work closely with Design Leadership to shape and evolve the mobile product experience vision, aligning day-to-day execution with longer-term direction.
Bring clarity to ambiguity and momentum to complex or stalled problem spaces.
Contribute to and strengthen HappyCo’s mobile design system, based on Material 3 and extended through a custom HappyCo theme.
Participate actively in Product Design team critiques and formal UX reviews, offering and receiving direct, high-signal feedback.
Help raise the bar for design quality, speed, and customer focus across the team.
What You Bring
Typically 8–10+ years of experience in product design, or equivalent demonstrated impact owning complex, real-world products.
Strong product instincts and high personal standards for quality, outcomes, and pace.
Proven experience owning end-to-end mobile product design in complex, real-world environments.
A portfolio that demonstrates depth of thinking, clear problem framing, and measurable impact.
Comfort operating with ambiguity and taking initiative without waiting for permission.
A demonstrated habit of monitoring your work after launch and acting on what you learn.
Ability to plan and run lightweight user research independently, including interviews, usability testing, and rapid feedback loops.
Good judgment around when to go deep on research vs when fast validation is sufficient, balancing rigor with pace, and familiarity with using research platforms (e.g. Great Question or similar) to manage recruitment, insights, and follow-up.
Strong business and product acumen, with the ability to weigh customer value against business impact, delivery cost, and strategic trade-offs.
Comfort engaging in technical discussions, reading code when helpful, and collaborating closely with engineers on feasibility and implementation details.
Willingness to collaborate across time zones (Australia & North America), including regular early morning starts to meaningfully connect with customers and colleagues during shared working hours.
Strongly Valued
Experience designing B2B or operational mobile products (e.g. field tools, logistics, inspections, healthcare, fintech).
A track record of breaking silos and influencing outcomes beyond your immediate scope.
Hands-on experience using AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor, Lovable, Figma Make, or similar) to accelerate design, prototyping, research synthesis, and insight generation.
Familiarity with mobile platform constraints (Flutter, iOS / Android patterns, performance, accessibility).
Experience working closely with engineers, including willingness to dive into implementation details or code when useful.
Exposure to analytics or adoption tooling (e.g. Gainsight, Adora or similar) and using data to guide iteration.
Strong synthesis and communication skills, with the ability to make insights visible and actionable for different audiences.
