Athena launched in 2019 with a simple mission: help Aussie borrowers save money and pay down their home loans faster. Our digital mortgage platform radically simplifies the application process, passing on the savings to customers.

Since then, we’ve grown. We’ve built Australia’s first cloud-native home loan platform covering the full value chain – acquire, originate, service, and fund. We work across both direct customers and broker partners, delivering a broad range of lending solutions that meet diverse borrower needs.

The Role

As a Senior Product Designer, you’ll design high-impact experiences across our customers, brokers, and internal teams, applying human-centred thinking to complex, regulated, and operationally rich environments.

A unique part of the role will be contributing to how we scale loan origination into the future and create a seamless experience for customers, brokers and our people. You'll balance solving today's problems with helping shape tomorrow's vision - prototyping and testing ways of working that improve clarity, accuracy, and speed across our origination and servicing operations. Working embedded with Product, Tech, and Ops, you'll form strong partnerships that help us design the future of work at Athena.

This is a hands-on, future-focused, individual contributor role. You’ll drive high-quality design outcomes in your domain through craft, insight, and collaboration - shaping solutions that work not just on screen, but across the entire system.

You will

Design across customer, broker, and internal experiences

• Apply human-centred design to direct customer experiences, broker facing tools (like our Broker Portal), and internal workflows and processes - because great experiences aren't just for end customers.
• Understand the broker journey and contribute to making Athena easy to work with.
• Map end-to-end journeys to connect what customers and brokers see with what happens behind the scenes.

Explore problems from discovery to delivery

• Run discovery within your problem space: research, stakeholder interviews, journey mapping, and opportunity framing.
• Solve immediate problems and build iteratively toward a compelling future state.
• Translate insights into clear problem definitions and testable hypotheses.
• Prototype and validate ideas before we commit to building them.
• Partner with engineers during delivery to ensure design intent is realised in production.

Bring ideas to life

• Create user flows, wireframes, and interactive prototypes to explore and communicate solutions.
• Leverage good UI design to ensure your vision translates into delightful, polished interfaces that customers and teams love to use.
• Define and measure experience success metrics (like task completion, accuracy, time-on-task, satisfaction) and iterate based on what the data tells you.

Collaborate deeply

• Work embedded within cross-functional squads - you’re in the detail, not on the sidelines.
• Take part in workshops, design critiques, and working sessions to align stakeholders.
• Clearly articulate trade-offs and design rationale to engineers, product managers, and operational leaders.

Contribute to design practice

• Share learnings that help raise the bar across the design team.
• Contribute to our design systems, tools, and ways of working.
• Explore how AI and emerging tools can enhance product experiences or design workflows.

What we’re looking for

• Proven end-to-end design experience - You have 5+ years’ experience working in complex problem spaces. You’ve taken work from discovery through to shipped outcomes with measurable impact.
• Comfortable across contexts - You're equally at home designing for end customers, B2B users like brokers, and internal teams. You understand that all deserve great design and that their needs are interconnected.
• Systems aware - You see how the pieces connect. You understand that great experiences aren't just screens, it's the entire system, including the operational processes and people that make it work.
• Artefact fluency - Process maps, journey maps, service blueprints, system diagrams, wireframes, prototypes - you know how to pick the right tool for the job and use it to bring clarity and alignment.
• Clear communicator - You articulate your thinking clearly and concisely. You can explain the “why” behind decisions and build alignment across diverse stakeholders.
• Future-focused, pragmatically grounded - You see a compelling vision of where we're heading while delivering value incrementally along the way.
• Visual sensibility - You have an eye for design and can bring your UX intent to life with interfaces that are clear, usable, and delightful.
• Collaborative to the core - No room for egos or elbows. You work well within cross-functional teams and believe the best work happens when diverse perspectives come together.

Nice to have

• Experience designing for internal tools or operational workflows.
• Experience with B2B products, broker or partner ecosystems.
• Exposure to lending, underwriting, or financial services.
• Curiosity about AI tools and how they can enhance product experiences or design workflows.
