The Role
We’re looking for a results-oriented Senior Product Data Scientist to help drive decisions on our core product, including our marketplace, to generate business impact and have a positive impact on our users’ lives. The role will consist of A/B testing, personalization, business analytics, and deeper research to inform major company decisions.
An ideal candidate would have strong data intuition, excellent communication skills, and the ability to execute fluently in both SQL and Python.
Here's how you'll impact the company:
- Contribute to software systems used by millions of low-income Americans
- Drive change through impactful data analysis and investigations
- Maintain reliable data pipelines to ensure trustworthy data.
- Work with product teams, starting with the marketplace team, but also potentially including the government benefits team, marketing, and growth.
- Effectively communicate with team members during projects, code review, etc.
Requirements:
- 5+ years of startup experience
- Fluency in SQL and either Python or R
- Experience leading research efforts on product and system opportunities
- Exceptional skills at converting questions into data analysis and insight, with just the right level of complexity.
- Quantitative mindset, strong at working with probability distributions, causal inference, cost-benefit analysis.
- Experience with a startup environment or the ability to operate effectively when faced with ambiguity
- Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences and topics
- Eagerness to learn new techniques, strong prioritization skills
- Passion for making a difference in the lives of our users
- Preferred: Experience writing production machine learning systems
- Nice to have: Experience with or knowledge of government services, particularly safety net services like SNAP, WIC, TANF, SSI, SSDI, Medicaid, Section 8

- Propel builds compensation bands referencing the 75th percentile of compensation for companies like us. Expected compensation for the role as scoped is $185,000 - $220,000 and will be based on how a candidate matches to our internal leveling guide. Bands may be expanded if someone is leveled more senior than the role was initially scoped.
