We are looking for a Payroll & Tax Senior Associate to support payroll and tax operations across Africa, Dubai, the UK, and the US. This is a junior-to-mid level, hands-on role in a fast-paced startup environment. 



You will help execute multi-country payrolls, ensure compliance with VAT and withholding tax requirements, and support process improvements and automation initiatives. The ideal candidate is proactive, analytical, and detail-oriented, ready to take ownership of tasks while learning and growing in a global finance function.



Key responsibilities 

Payroll Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, review, and submit monthly payrolls across multiple countries, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with local regulations.
  • Process payroll payments, including net salaries, taxes, pensions, bonuses, and statutory deductions, using the payroll platforms, Excel, and Google Sheets.
  • Assist in managing special payroll runs such as annual bonuses, salary increases, retroactive pay, and off-cycle payrolls.
  • Support the preparation of annual payroll returns and statutory filings.
  • Reconcile payroll data to management accounts and audited financial statements.
  • Maintain payroll documentation and ensure processes are audit-ready.
  • Support payroll automation and standardisation across multiple countries.
  • Coordinate with HR and Finance on new hires, terminations, transfers, compensation changes, leave schemes, garnishments, and benefits.
  • Respond to employee payroll queries and escalate complex issues as needed.

Tax Responsibilities 

  • Assist in preparing and submitting VAT and withholding tax filings across Africa, Dubai, the UK, and the US.
  • Support payroll-related tax reconciliations and ensure compliance with local regulations.
  • Identify potential tax issues and implement corrective measures proactively.
  • Liaise with external tax advisors as required.

Proactive & Analytical Responsibilities:

  • Identify payroll and tax process inefficiencies and suggest improvements.
  • Analyze payroll and tax data to detect trends, discrepancies, or potential compliance risks.
  • Take ownership of assigned tasks, follow through independently, and escalate issues when necessary.
  • Support automation, standardisation, and scalability initiatives to optimize processes.


Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (BCom Accounting or equivalent).
  • 2-4 years of hands-on payroll experience, including multi-country payroll (Africa required; Dubai, UK, US a plus).
  • Practical experience with VAT and withholding tax compliance.
  • Proficient with Payroll systems and HR platforms, Excel, and Google Sheets.
  • Highly proactive, analytical, and detail-oriented.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced startup environment.
  • Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive payroll and tax information with integrity.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams.
  • Comfortable executing tasks while taking ownership and driving improvements.
  • Knowledge of global payroll and tax best practices is advantageous.
